I'm interested in buying a 4x4 hard core round baler ,probably only will bale about 100-150 bales a season. I have no preferance to brands but am looking for something reliable also looking for pros and cons of differant modles and brands. Thanks for any help.

If you find a early Massey Ferguson they were made by Vermeer. You can usually find 4ft dia.
balers fairly reasonable. Here in IOWA almost everyone wants 5ft. balers but 4ft. bales are a
LOT easier to handle with smaller tractors. My 2 cents worth.....Good Luck

For only 150 bales a year, I have had good luck with my hesston 5510, narrow belt and 20 years old, but parts are easy to get and i bought the baler for $1500. Rated for a 55 -70hp tractor.

Rick,
I live just south of Des Moines. I'm in the market for the best round baler I can get for under $3000. With 12 acres of timothy I can't justify paying much more. I would appreciate any info e-mailed to me. Thanks

What's your budget? For $6-10,000 any of the JD, NH, Vermeer, or Gehl balers of recient years will work fine. That is what is popular around 'here'.

If you are looking to spend less, then you need to watch for things - open throat, hyd pressure, wide belts = better...

You can own a Vermeer 5'x 4' baler for the same or less money than the other colors 4'x 4' balers. The Vermeer will make a tighter & heavier bale with less HP demand that the other guys.

You'll run into a lot of Vermeer folks here and from all I've heard they are good balers. I didnt consider one b/c I've got no dealer support. I do have a half doze NH and JD dealers in 30 mins. Both my next door neighbor and and I have 4x6's the we mostly run on 4x4 (him for baleage, me for baleage and b/c they sell faster (and for almost as much) as a 4x5 or 4x6. I've got a 650 NH and he has a new ('03) JD. I got my NH after borrowing my dad's 650 for 10 years and if I had to get another baler tomorrow I'd look for another one or the newer version. Right now I'm seeing 650's on dealer lots for $7500-$10K.
