Hi, I am trying to find a figure or formula for converting a bushel of ear corn to shelled corn. Any help is appreciated.

70 lb. of dry ear corn = 1 bushel (56 lb.)of dry corn.

I'VE WONDERED ABOUT THIS CONVERSION. IT SEEMS SOME HYBRIDS NOW HAVE A SMALLER COB AND DEEPER KERNELS THAN CORN DID 15 YEARS AGO.

All Measurements in Feet

Shelled formula;
0.8 X L X W X H = Bu (Rectangular)
0.6283 X Diameter X Diameter X H = Bu (Round)

Ear
0.4 X L X W X H = Bu
0.31416 X Dia X Dia X H = Bu

We always figured a bushel of good quality ear corn-deep kernals, etc.- would shell out 1/2 bushel of grain.

Good quality ear corn settled in the bin will hold out to 2 1/2 cubic foot to a bushel. Shelled corn in a bin figures out to number of cubic foot times .8 .

Close as I can come but looks to me like shelled would be about 40% of ear.

It is, generally, figured on a 56# shell corn bushel if you want a weight basis. Adjustments need to be made for 14.5-15% moisture if yours is wetter.

56# kernals = 1 bushel

72# of ear corn = 1 bu of shell corn.

That would mean you throw away 16# of cobs & husk for every bu of shell corn.

On a volume basis, I'm less sure of my numbers. A bu is 1.25 cubic feet? And a bu of ear corn is 1.44 cubic feet I believe????? But my FSA office has used different numbers _every_ time I go there just to play with my mind.... Fresh stacked ear corn occupies more space than old, compressed ear corn. Please don't rely on these volume numbers without someone else saying they are good.
