Hi I found something yesterday that I have never seen before. Its a massey harris 2 row self propelled corn picker. The head was out front and the elevator n the middle in the back. It was kinda neat looking and I was wondering if many were made? Is it rare or just to me? There is also 2 self propelled massey combines. Are these worth anything besides scrap? Thanks
Matt

The M-H sp picker wasn't rare when it was new. My grandfather said there were several in use around here back in the early '50s by custom corn harvesters. However, when the original Uni-System came out from Minnie-Mo, the custom harvesters went to them because they could use the same chassis with either the combine unit or the picker unit. Then when on-farm driers became widely available, they all went to regular combines with corn heads. Most of the M-H SP pickers ended up being junked long ago because nobody wanted them. Now they are considered rare, and I think seeing one restored and operating in a corn field is a treat.

Our first corn head was the same type as on the SP picker. That was on an MH 80 Special in 1956 or '57, if memory serves correct.
