best way to transport a 4 row planter

I need to transport a 4 row planter to my farm (3 hours from where the planter is).

What is the best way?

Rent a car trailer? Hire it done? Tow is slowly on back roads?

Remove the hitch, rent a car trailer and load it endwise.

If you just tow it - I'm not sure how well it will track at speed. You'll also need to stop a lot for grease to make sure the bearings don't heat up. I agree with packing a lunch because your return 3 hour trip will probably take 6 or more hours.

I would tow it, but that is me. You might have more traffic/ urban areas than I do.

Take the chains off!!!!! If this is a planter that has chain drive from the wheels, like a JD 7000.

Secure or remove the loose parts, and taking the markers down so you don't wipe out trees/ etc. is good.

I bought a 3pt 20' bean bar planter a year ago, 35 miles. THAT was a fun drive with the tractor. But then, a lot of farmers around here go that far with all their equipment for all the land they rent.

Just towed a 4-row IH 56 planter home last month. It took a little over 2 hours. I took the main road but started early in the morning before the traffic started getting heavy. I had to tow it right through a city. Probably ticked a few people off along the way but life goes on.

I'd load it endwise on my trailer and take the hitch off. But since you don't have a trailer just hook to it and pull it home. Stuff has been dragged further.

Take the boxes off, and any loose parts, secure or remove the markers, and make sure it has a way to lock it up into trasport position. That way there won't be any surprises.

People say I'm crazy, but I just grease the bearings real good and trail it home on back roads. Nice and slow and enjoy the scenery.
