Away from the political aspects. I had a JF disc cutter, just about the same. Used it for 3 years and traded it in on a 1412 New holland. Never had a problem with it, just keep the knives sharp and check the gear oil. I think the dealer is selling that one for around 3K and it is in perfect condition.

I did a lot of mowing using a disc mower for the local dept of transportation, for many years. Ylu can mow very fast, over 8 mph and a few idiots have been known to drive it in road gear. with them off of the shoulders and rarely plug up. The only thing that will plug them is a tire or a vinyl gunnysack etc. The bad part is that they are dangerous, some of the knives have broken off and flew into peoples houses and so the dot no longer allows them to be used in town. Its been a few years now since I have mowed but I think most of them are being phased out for safety concerns. Maitenance can also be expensive because the drum bearings that the knives rotate from will start to leak oil over time and iff you run out you will burn out all of the gears in short order at a cost of over $2000 in just parts. A sicle mower is still the cheapest mower out there but you do have to maintain the sections and guards for it to cut good.

Not to accuse you of being stupid or anything but it sounds more like you guys were using a flail mower rather than a disc mower. But you were there not me

ANYONE at the DOT that tried to use a disc mower for roadside mowing lacks judgment and should have been fired. I don't mean the operator but the person that made the decision to use a disc mower. Disc mowers are for harvesting hay and not designed for roadside mowing. A flail mower or brush hog should be used. Boom mowers with flail heads or ditch bank mowers are used in tight spots where a standard tractor behind cutter can not be used. Disc mowers are great for their intended use. Poor judgment like this can get someone severely hurt.

Just another example of poor leadership in the public arena. I have no faith in our elected officials to make sound fundamental decisions. A-Its not their money and B most have spent a lifetime to get where they are and have never accumulated an ounce of common sense. County judges, superitendants of local boards, governors, mayors. etc. There was a time in this country where elected officials served the public-now the public serve the elected official-I see this at local board of education meetings give us the taxpayment and go home-which is what most people do now. In fact the average Joe on the street is an idiot-it takes way to much time to be informed and educated-just entertain me

I could not agree more.
Disc mowers are for cutting CROPS not roadside verges! I have cut acres upon acres with a disc mower and hardly ever broke a blade. Both the Lely and the Vicon mowers I had never had any bearing failures or leaks.
