Haybine Roller Construction Questions

I was having a look-see at an old MF 725 haybine and noticed it had a steel roller on the bottom and a laminated roller on top, similar to that of an IH 990. The laminated roller was constructed of pieces of a belting material, cut to the roller diameter and stacked on a shaft to construct the roller. This construction looked VERY durable vs the rollers I see that have a rubber coated roller. I have read that on some of these rubber coated rollers, as they age, the rubber can come off and there is really no way to replace it - buy a new roller if it is available.

I have two questions. Aside from the MF 725 and the IH 990, are (or were) there any other makes and models of haybines that used this construction and what is your experience with it?

Oh, before I forget, what do you think of the MF 725 and IH haybines?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Dad has used the same IH 990 7 foot for 25 years.Total repairs have cost less than 100.00 in that time.

Bill, as far as to what type of roller is the best is almost as controversial as to which brand of tractor is the best. For myself being a New Holland man, I like the interlocking rubber rolls the best. However, those who told you that New Holland and John Deere styled rolls have trouble keeping the rubber on was correct. The rolls you descibed by MF and IH will be pretty touble free. However, for all the alfalfa growers out there, I will put NH/Deere rollers up against anyone's as far as drying time, leaf loss, and overall condition of the hay. The rougher the surfice of the roll, the more cracked and brittle the hay becomes. Obviously, these are my opinions. I have no problem with other opinions. Steve

We used to have rubber laminated on rollers by a company in Pella, Iowa.
