I need the number to the generac factory for
this generator. I called the generac phone # and
I got the run around from their automated phone system, when I did get someone, she sent to the wrong factory. I have lost excitation on this generator. I have narrowed it down to the printed
circuit board "control box". I need to get a hold
of them to order it.

I have a 40 80 generac and had the same problem. the problem is with the brushes that excite it. They are soft and as they wear they get a film on them. Get a small screwdriver and gently pull each brush away from the armature, and using a piece of slippery cardboard (such as a piece off a coke case) rub the brush. You will get some grey material deposit on the cardboard. That worked for me. I was also told that I should invest in a spare set of brushes. Hope this helps.

Hi Dave
Farmer Gene is right, you probably just need to reflash the field. Generators should be excercised every couple of months loaded at a minimum of half rated capacity to prevent this from occuring.

A 12 volt battery applied to the output leads of the generator is sufficient but I can`t remember the exact association so I won`t lie to you. You also need to get directly to the generator leads, you can`t backfeed through the voltage regulator. Any generator repair shop should be able to do this for you at minimal cost.

From what I understand, losing the field is pretty much the norm, especially if the gen isn't used frequently. I haven't had any problem with mine but it does say in the manual to excite the field with an external source of elect power if the gen won't generate electricity. If you have a manual it should tell you how to do this.

Before you order a circuit boad from Generac, try and see if Sears can get it. I repaid gensets, and if I needed a generac part, I would order through Sears because it was near half price. Also I didn't get the run around.

Premier Power Systems
Ask for Doug, very knowledgeable. He helped me plan my LP genset install for my new house.
