corn planting

I have about four acres that I would like to plant in corn for the deer next year. I will probably want to plant sweet corn, ornamental and pop corn. Any ideas on a multi use 2 row machine and how I might find one?

I like my jd 290 planter, I had to pay 300 for mine. It came with a parts machine that I sold for 100. I my area John Deere has the strongest dealer support, any of my other brand equipment have become very diffucult to get parts for. If you do get a planter a very good source of plates is lincolnagproducts.com

I recently got a 290 J.D. planter for $40, but your not likely to find one that cheap. Finding the exact plates you need can sometimes difficult too. Most of the hard to find specialty plates are still available from J.D. if you want to pay the price. Most of the old 2 rows don't have fert. hoppers any more either. I think I would look at farm auctions and try to find a J.D. 7000 4 row. They are going pretty cheap now and no worries on plates.

I use a Ford Dearborn 309 two-row, three-point hitch planter. I like it. Being three-point hitch makes it real handy for tight places. It has a good working dry fertizer hopper, and finding replacement parts has not been a problem. All kinds of plates available too, but seems only Ford has them and they're expensive. Ford even sold blank plates for it, so you could "notch" your own for weirdo seed sizes. It's also available with several size seed hoppers which is nice. Since you're not planting large acreage, the smaller the hopper the better. Sounds like you don't want to have to use 10-20 lbs. of seed just to plant one pound. Big hoppers don't work well unless they have a lot of seed in them. That's why small narrow hoppers work nice, espcially if you're planting sweet corn and switching varieties often. Of course, my neighbor uses his John Deere 4 row, but he has a couple of kids ride on the back of it while he's planting. Since there's so litte seed in each hopper, the kids stir it up with a stick as he goes along. Hey, it works - not sure if OSHA would approve.

I just bought a real nice two row JD planter with milo , bean , and corn plates for 300.00 on ebay.

You could buy an excellent field ready 4row jd 1240 for $100 here, buy three of them for the price of your two row and you are set for life on parts and equipment
