Using a corn planter?

I bought an old Dearborn 2 row corn planter and fixed it up. Everything works exept for the fertilzer boxes, it doesn't have any. It's set for 30" rows.

I'd like to plant sunflowers this spring for a dove field. I have a 10 acre field that has been disked up the last few years, and broadcasted with small grains, fertilzer, and lime. Right now there is alot of stalk residue on the ground and quite a few weeds have germinated.

What should I do to the ground before using the 2 row planter? Do I disk it parrallel, perpendicular, diagonal to the direction the sunflower rows will be planted?

Should I disk it up a little now, or should all the residue be left on the ground over winter?

My other implements are a plow, boxblade with scarifying teeth, bush hog, the planter and a 35 horse tractor.

Any other tips or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Paul, I do much the same thing with my Super C. I always plow first, after fertilizer is spread. Then disc couple of times and put on a pre-emergence herbicide (Prowl @ 3/12 pt/ac rate) then plant. My sunflowers are 36 inch rows. Cultivate a couple of times...almost no weeds...also, leave 4 rows, mow down 2 a few days before dove season...you'd be surprised at the doves!! By the hundreds...even thousands...good shooting....Cmore

Paul, turn all that mess under now and let it rot all winter for "fertilizer" then come spring planting time, disc the heck out of it, drag it nice and smooth then go to work with those seed in that planter. If the doves don't enjoy them, every body that sees that 10 acres of sunflowers sure will!
