What kind if front loader will work an a Farmall M

Hello, I have a 1950 Farmall "M" in very good un-restored shape, just wondering what type of front loader would work on the old tractor. It is completely original and I am sure hydrolic work is required. Any help would be useful. Also how about a belly mower.... are there any made? The tractor is only used for grading the driveway, occasional bush hogging, and maybe pulling the little ones around when it snows on a big home made sled. Trying to make the old tractor useful enough to avoid buying a new tractor.

My 2 cents worth is to recommend an old F10 Farmhand loader. These old loaders are big and awkward, but they keep the weight of the load on the rear wheels, savind front end trouble down the road. They are cheap and plentiful. They are also the highest lift out there.
Get the later models as the early ones with the exposed cable and hydraulic cylinder can be dangerous.

How do you keep the "load off the front wheels" when you have a front mount loader? That idea defies basic physics! If you can do that you better patent it because no one has yet been able to accomplish that.

Part of the saving of the front end is because the big loader moves more straight up and down, not as much of an arc. This allows the load to never move as far forward and still not be too far back at some other point, most likely all the way up.

I think what Jim means is that compared to other "front hang" loaders, the F-10 carries more weight at the rear axle.

If you will notice how they are mounted, the fulcrum is located behind the rear tires and that weight is then transferred to the loader hitch at the rear of the tractor. This puts more weight on the rear housing/axles.

Not my claim, just what Farmhand had to say about the design, take a look at the bracing and research the loader yourself. I know that there were millions of them sold to fit Farmall M and similar sized tractors. I don't recall ever heard of one breaking the front end out of an old tractor, but of course, I am most likely totally out of my mind.

It would be quite interesting to do a "scientific study" by measuring the weight on the front wheels of a given tractor with different brands of loaders installed and the front tractor wheels always at the same point on the scale and the same amount of added weight placed into the buckets of each different loader. And most certainly Jim you are not out of your mind. These discussions are great thought provokers!

Josh,

You need to talk to the Nebraska Cowman. He has a Farmhand F-11 mounted on a M. Hydraulics are all self contained. It looks like quite a setup to me.

The F-10 will work great too, but it might be overkill for your purposes.

Does it only have the single-acting belly hydraulics (probably), or does it have the distributor double-acting hydraulics? If a regular M, the pto is not live, so a pto hyd pump will be less fun, but possible.

Kind of a big tractor for a belly mount mower, but I'm sure Woods & all the rest have them.

Is it a narrow front or wide front?
