I used my NH55 rake as a tedder last year and it works but seems like alot of work and wear and tear on the rake.

What would be a good older one that does not cost lot?
I seem to remember my Grandfather has a small 7 foot one that was ground driven that just fliped the hay over the top of it. Dont remember what it was called though.

I saw a H&S reel type tedder in near new condition sell for $1200 last Sat. They sell for $1900 new. I bought a used Kuhn GRS 25 pto rake/tedder. It is a rotary type. Gave $650 ($4500 new). I have raked a lot with an Allis pto rake with reverse and it did a good job. They seemed to have a problem breaking gear cases though. Tedders should be pretty reasonable. I like the combo rake/tedder. Good Luck.

I have a friend that has one been sitting on his place for a long time. It is Duetz unit I think, cheap. They just are not used much in my area. More for grassy hay in my experience. Rick Let me know

How did you use an NH 55 rake as a tedder? It does not have a reverse in it.

Easy, you just set one of the hight adjusters low and the other side high.
This will make it flip the wind row over and spread it out. Spreads it out over about 7 feet.
If the hay has not been wind rowed yet. You have to rake it into a wind row then go back over and spread it.
Also if you just want to flip a wind row so that the bottom gets to the sun. Just run the rake so that it just catches the windrow at the out side of the rake. It just flips it right over.

MANY years ago,,,,we had an AC rake at home, with a reverse gear in it- it was a pto rake- and when you set it to tedding, the rake ran backwards, and fluffed up the windrow. For the last thirty years, when I wanted to tip a windrow to upend the bottom side, all I did was drive accordingly, alongside the existing windrow, without adjusting anything, and flipped it over.

I still use the AC PTO. It's an art to get that thing to just do a "half flip". Seems like an inch off one way or the other and you get a full flip.

Now if I could just find cheap replacement teeth for the stupid thing. A NH tine "works" but to go to Agco for the real McCoy is like $7 something. Not in my life time for the amount of teeth that thing uses!!!!! !!!!! ! LOL.

But I do love the reverse, just hope there isn't any wind after you "fluff".

25 years pulling that 55, and never thought of angling it vertically - tho in Alfalfa you wouldn't want to anyhow. Usually just flip the windrow a 1/2 turn like you suggested.

Interesting.

Hey, since you really took yours apart, I have a question. My rear left drive wheel is kinda loose & wobbly, is it just wore out, or was there a thin bushing in there I can replace? Obviously I won't be looking at new $$$$ hub if it just is how it is.

Paul,

There is a bushing in that hub. I think a total of less than $25. There are 2 bushings per hub part number 46988

Good thing Jerry answered as I havent taken mine apart yet. I will this winter though. I am going to grease those once every 2 (ahem decade) year bearings on the end of the rake bars.

Grimm and Pequea made ground-drive back-reel tedders that can often be had for a few hundred bucks. PTO drive Pequea back-reel tedders are still made new, and seem to bring higher prices where alfalfa is grown, but not so much where it is mainly grass hays.
