I have been given an IH 400 planter (haven't seen it yet).

Are these any good?

It is worth hauling home?

The air planters are pretty good. Around 'here' when the 400 series came out, everyone went to pulling a JD 7000. You can't get a $300 bid on a 400 around here.

Doesn't mean they are bad, it just means other things are better.... And now, people are going to the 900 & better series planters, pulling them with their green tractors - so the basic idea is sound.

The 400 was the first of their air planters. Lots of bugs to work with on those first models of anything.

You have to watch the air leaks. They don't work so well on rolling hills, gravity issues, keep them on level ground. The openers weren't the best design. They do not evenly space corn kernals in the row, which is the goal in today's high-production world. Considering their sales value, it's difficult to put much money into fixing one up, and at their age they probably need some parts.

That doesn't make them bad, tho. Just what they are.

I have a very nice 12row (30) 900 series planter if any you fellows would be interested. It is horizontal rear fold model. Really slick working unit. It will work in all conditions

Hi Michael,

Those are excellent planters with their only weak point being the shoes; ground travel tends to wear off the bottoms, which have to be replaced periodically. And, I suspect this is why they lost their popularity.

Also, if it has been setting for some time, you will probably have to check that hydro motor and like the other fellea stated, all the rubber comprising the air sealing will have to be replaced.

But, all in all, you are gonna like it.

Pretty good old planters if they have been kept shedded and arent beaten to death.I have one complete 400 6x30 and 2 parts ones sitting at my place.I now use an 800.

The main thing is be sure of no air leaks so you can run the right air pressure.

I have a IH Cyclo 400 planter (6-30" row) setting back here in the woods. It has been setting there for about 8 years, but all the parts are on it (it has dry fertilizer boxes, and insecticide boxes. I set it back there when I bought a really nice Cyclo 800. I was still using it to plant when I parked it. Haven't figured out what to do with it yet.... thought about just cutting it up for scrap.

Well, if you don't like it you can haul it right over to my place!(Smile ;-D)

We bought one this last spring for $200..... ....Probably one of the best buys we ever made! I really love it! Wish it had the rest of the No-Till goodies though. Good planter no the less IMO!

Besides, FREE is GOOD!

Yeah, it is about 4 hours from my farm. But as you say, Free is good.

Gotta find somebody to haul the darned thing now. From the description, it is a 6 or 8 row.

Sounds like it was abandoned by the previous owner of my friend's acreage.
