is this a case of open center vs closed center? On out Metavik (sp) log forwarder there is a special plug on the forwarder's controls that has to be switched when going from ford (open) to John deere (closed) . The forwarder (log graple and trailer combo) is hooked up to the tractor;s hydralics and the tractors lever is left on, the rest is controled by the levers on the forwarder.

Perhaps you have a mismatch of hydraulic coupler tips, and one or both are not engaging completely, or one of the tips does not have it's check valve depressed.
