Small squares of just regular grass hay went for $4.50 a bale at the auction barn in Mora, MN the other day. Wish I had about 20,000 more bales right now. Wait till spring its going to get ugly.

Kelly I live in Rush city and sold out 1st crop at 3 second at 3.5 and some of what I got off the 3rd at 4.00. I have only about 700 left but it is quality stuff. No mold dust or weeds all grass (orchard and timothy). I had one lady tell me she buys her hay at 2 a bale, i told her to keep shopping.

I am over by the old martins resort road. How many acres are you putting up, I only cut around 70 acres but I am looking for another 40 to lease.

I did about 50 acres last year. All mine is custom haying Shares or cash. Oh I got 5 of my own and 6 more I can do just to keep it mowed.
For next year I have 50 lined up firm for 3 cuttings. If there is 3 cuttings. This year it was 1 and a 1/2.
I am looking for maybe another 20 acres to lease for cash and maybe a few fields more custom as needed.
Lookin to buy 80 acres if I ever get over sticker shock.

Here in Ontario , I'm finding a great demand in Florida for first cut mixed hay. It seems the poor weather this spring has resulted in very poor quality hay all the way down the East coast. There's an abundance of 2nd. and 3rd.cut so the real demand is for good 1st cut. Believe it or not , we're moving 5-6 yr. old hay ,to fill the gap, at $3.50/ bale. Not unusual as this situation arises every 10yrs or so and lets us clean out our barns.

The way it usually works around here (MD) is that prices start to rise this time of year like clockwork because producers think by keeping their hay off the market they'll make a killing in the dead of winter. Buyers get nervous and fill their barns, so prices spike. As a result, there is a little less hay, but also many fewer buyers for quite a while and prices come back down. Then the farmers with full barns start to get nervous toward March and the price drops like a stone. You can'tell tell anything by reading the auction reports, they print prices ranging form .75 to $5 a bale. You have to go see what's what. The guys who put up good quality round bales and store it inside do well if the snow is bad, because they are a whole lot less labor intensive to feed to horse out in the field. Some of those went for as much as $60 last winter, if you could find them.
Our spring was terrible for hay, but fall was pretty good. I'll bet there will be plenty of supply.

I have horses, do my own hay, but follow a board for the MN area for the equine industry that is comprised mostly of people around the metro area.

They are screaming for supplies of good grass hay. Doesn't surprise me a bit about the $4.50 a bale price. I haven't gone to the Hutch sale yet to see what the prices are around here. Way too much dairy in this area for a supply of good grass hay. Most grass around here is ditch hay. Some of it is quite good hay tho, don't get me wrong.

If I could get away with it, I know I could move about another 1500 small squares a year or more. But the operation wouldn't allow me at this time. My situation is unique to say the least, something I won't get into here on the board.

Anyway, lots of the metro horse people are looking up your way Kelly to find hay for the winter, one of the reasons the prices are way up for you guys.

On a side note Kelly, the pic of your haybine looks like one I have here. If you are interested in one for spare parts, you can have it for the asking.

The people with horses like the nice squares of grass without any clover. But you have to have it stored inside and catch the market. Nice staw also sells at a premium too. Some people get into this market and build up a client base that comes back every year.

I sell when I can, as some years I could not hardly give it away. Rounds are not popular with the horse people but a lot easier to do when you are a one person operation.

I might trade off for a 4X5 baler than the 5X6 I have now as hay buyers prefer these for hauling.

Yeah, sold 1200 bales for $1.75. Now I hear that it's going for up to $4.00 at the local auction. But at least I don't have to transport it! My bales are kinda loose, and mostly grass, so I don't feel too bad.

Well, as they say there's one born every minute and anyone who thinks average hay is worth 4.50 must be a farmer, because thats what I think its worth too. The problem is the best you can get is 2.50-3.00 unless one one a minute guys comes along.

In my neck of the woods, we had huge amounts of rain and hay, so prices are down somewhat, but the horse folks still pay top dollar for quality hay.

In my part of southern MN hay stays around $1.50-250. All the time. Was that real good dairy alfalfa?

I didnt go to it. I was talking to the Tractor mechanic at Larson Implement and he was there Monday. He said it was just Grass hay of average quality. That does not supprise me though. No one is selling around here right now.
Makes me almost want to go buy a few big rounds and rebale them in squares.

I am sure thats not every where. But it is here in this local market. People were buying up hay middle of Sept. I knew I should be keeping my hay then but you know the old saying about a bird in hand.

Take the bird in the hand and dont worry about it. I sold 150 steers in Sept (6 weights) for $1.04, best I've ever done. They would be high 7's now and I could get $1.10. Good for the guy that bought them! I made money. Canadian border could have opened and I'd lost out. Same with hay, barn could burn down. When you get the price you need, sell and never look back. Just wish I could sell any kind of hay. Right now I've normally sold at least 90%, this year less than 10%. It will sell but going to play heck with my income tax.

I sold all my first cutting last year in Sept. This year I've only sold one load. Of course the market in Virginia and New Jersey was strong to say the least last year. This year everyone has hay but there isn't much excellent quality hay. The quality appears to be the same as other years until you go and have it tested. I had a cow the other day get sick and the vet said the hay could be a cause. He said he's seen lots in this area. All my hay was made early and looks and smells good but apparently some of the nutrients are missing.

Yea I am not complaining I sold. I didnt have top quality hay and lots of oats hay some of it only good for banking hay. One guy came and got it all.
Even my test bales for my big baler. I just wish I could have had more hay to do. I ended up a few thousand bales under what I wanted. Aug was no good for hay.
