I am pretty sure using bale baskets will be what I end up using when all is said and done.
Do any of you guys know if you can lease them for a period of time before you buy them?
I sure would like to try them out for a year before I fork out the kind of money it will take to own 3 of them.

I loved them and they are less work than kicker wagons to unload. I grewup behind kickers so been ther done that. I heard all same you are getting is they are either junk or to much work. If your serious give me a ring. THEY DO WORK SLICK IF YOU KNOW THE TRICKS!!! Rick

Kelly, I am not sure what you are calling a bale basket. Here in TX we have Tumble-Bug bale buggys. The unit is backed up to the bale ,Axle has brakes so plug it in into your lights sys. Pull your lights on to acctivate the brakes. The buggy folds up and a arm flips over and catches the bale. Pull forward, buggy unfolds, cut off lights...go to the stack lot.
Good little rigs to move a few bales or even feed with. But you can put on a bunch of miles moveing one bale at a time. These can be bought for + - $ 850 new.I hope this is simular to your haybasket. There are a number of manufactures that make gooseneck or bumperpull round bale trailers. These trailers haul multiple bales from 2 ot 3. To 7 or 8. each bale is set in its own cradle by a tractor with a loader, then when the trailer reaches the stack lot the drivers simply trips a catch to dump the bale off, then returm back to the field. They can be gotten for about 1500 to 2500.
Down side of these trailers are it takes a larger 3/4, 4x4 pickup to handle the bigger trailers.

Your 400 should be able to handle round bales OK. You might need extra wt in the back though. You would probablly need to change your front tires in time to a larger floatation/ airplane type they don't mash down as like reg front tractor tires.
This would be as close to a one man show as it can get.
Surly there is a neighbor or a dealer that would let you try it out for a while.
Hollar back If I can be of help.
have a Happy Thanksgiving
Ya'll be safe on the road!
Later, John A.

The bale basket Kelly is talking about is for small square bales, towed behind the baler. A kicker/thrower is not used- the bale chute lines up with a chute on the front of the wagon, and the bales get pushed to the top of the basket and fall in. They ride on three wheels, hold a hundred or so bales. Lets one guy bale and load without throw wagons. Personally, I like throw wagons- they hold 140 bales and can be used for other purposes. Bale baskets dump the bales in a mess by the elevator and you end up carrying them a ways to load the elevator. My throw wagons unload near the front on each side, some unload in front, and some even have a single chain in the floor to move bales to the front unloading platform. All depends how much you want to spend and how you like to work.

Some neighbors have them and from what I have seen of them I would want nothing to do with them, to me they are a bunch of junk, Give me a bale thrower anytime, you can own 5 bale wagons for the price of one bale basket

I see a lot more busted bales with a thrower. I see a lot more machinery & upkeep & moving parts with the thrower. I have hills & irregular fields, a lot of bales would miss the rack with a thrower.

Bale basket & thrower rack both cost about $1500 here in my part of southern MN. Where & what kind of bale racks are you buying?????

Unloading either is not a fun job, I think unloading the thrower rack is slightly easier. But loading the basket is a lot less fuss.

Same cost for the rack/basket itself, basket doesn't need the expense of the thrower & it's maintenence, one loads easier, the other unloads easier.

Pretty much a push to me on labor/ ease of loading/unloading, slight nod to the basket for less cost?

Don't see why you would need 3 baskets, unload one while you load the other one. A bale catcher you can't unload as fast, might need more of those with a thrower.

Never priced any but on this board I have seen prices of $3500 per basket, at that price devided by 5 is $700 and for that I can go out and buy used running gears of 4-5 ton rating and buy the wood to make the beds, 7X16' for that price and I would not own a wagon that is over 7' wide, to dangerous on roads

I have 2 flat racks that I got $700 into them both. But thats not the issue for the use of a basket or not. Its the labor cost/ Avaliblilty and time that is the issue.
I should be ok this year. I have a kid that I have been talking to that acts like he wants to work. We will see.
Or if I can get my wife to run the baler. She is scared of it right now. She knows how grummpy I can get so I cant blame her there.
I need to work on that.

We went from flat racks to kicker bales to baling on the ground and using a NH tow behind auto-bale wagon prior to purchasing our first three bales baskes 13 years ago. At this point we would never use anything but a bale basket. Generally speaking, your type of hay operation and availability of help will ultimately determine if bale baskets are the best for you. The first three baskets we purchased replaced 5 kicker wagons, we now run five bale baskets, mainly due to road travel time saved when baling over three miles from the barn. From reading all the other responses all I can say is "to each their own", but for the price, ease of use and ability to maintain I would never go back to our previous bale handling methods. Our bale baskets are our "BEST BUYS".

Why not? As long as they are the inlaws you could just dump them at the end of the drive.

do you realy have the size operation that will justify the expence? And then if you don't keep them stored inside they will be very short-lived. Pull a flat rack behind your baler; your wife or kid can drive, or else drop the bales on the ground and have customers come that evening with their kids and pick the bales up in the feild.

<<>> No not right now.

I pretty much have killed my haying budget for the next year or so any way.
Time is a major issue though. How I wish haying season was in the winter. In the winter I have all kinds of time. The summer With working 50 + hrs in the cities to pay the mortgage. I have to budget time wisely.
