Info about early manure spreaders?

Hi,

I'm writing an article about today's little scaled-down horse farm manure spreaders and I'd like to include a few paragraphs about "the real thing".

Can anybody tell me who invented the manure spreader and which companies built the first ones, what they cost at the time, that sort of thing? I can't seem to find this info online and I think a bit of history would be a real asset to what I'm writing.

Sue, airy one nose the manure spreader was invented by them polyticians in Wa DC. Heck, they was spreading manure afore ther wus any manure to spread. Joe

Back about 50 years ago I saw one which must have been 50 years old at the time. It had the front wheels spaced about 2 feet apart. The sides of the bed were anout shoulder high to an average man and the bed was about 18 - 24 inches deep. The bottom of the bed was a wood slatted floor which moved to the back of the machine and then had to be cranked back to the front for reloading. The beater was made of wood with steel spikes in it. No, I'm just a writer. My hubby and I do the Tools of the Trade column for Hobby Farms magazine. Our editor wants us to review the teeny manure spreaders being manufactured by Roda, Millcreek Manufacturing, etc., downsized for horse owners, hobby farmers and the like.

I like to add a few tidbits about the history of whatever we review and can usually find material online. But I sure can't find much about older manure spreaders, so I very much appreciate the help you guys are giving me!

I think Green Magazine did a series of articles on John Deere spreaders a while back. You might try contacting them to get a copy of them. Good luck.
