We recently bought a JD 290 two row trailer type corn planter in excellant shape. A few hours with a wire brush and a paint brush and it looks like new.The planter came with 7 sets of plastic seed plates. JD only has specs on the OEM metal plates. The plates that came with the machine are made of plastic and appear to be color coded. plates have part numbers but no MFG info so i can not find the specs to determine what seeds to match with the plates. can anyone tell me how to measure the plates or perhaps who may be making plastic after market plates? The is also a small hopper mounted midline and a bit above the fertilizer hoppers. It has a screen in the bottom and a chain driven despensing rotor. There originally was a decal on that hopper that warned of handling chemicals so i assume this hopper is intended for pesticide. i have been toying with the idea of mixing very small seeds like beets and carrots with sand and dispensing through the pesticide hopper, we are a very small farm (60 acres) and just in the intitial startup phase so we intend to do a lot of truck gardening to get some cash flow while we work towards acquiring haymaking equipment. if this idea will work i think i could use it to plant beets, carrots, collard and mustard greens. Can anyone offer any advice on this idea?
