NH 68 Knotter question

Last spring I rebuilt the knotters. New knife arms and bill hooks. They are adjusted proprly.
I found that it would frequently hang a knot on the right side and 3 bales would need to be refed.

I kept an eye on this tying to see what was happening that would cause this. I noticed every time a knot would hang. That there was an excesive amoung of trash under the knife arm.
Depending on the type of hay and how dirty the stuff was.
Dusty oats hay I would get about 50 bales before it would hang. On nice clean alfalfa I may only get one or 2 hangs the entire field.
I am pretty sure that this is caused by that build up pushing the knife arm out of alighnment.

I am now wondering if maybe the socket that the knife arm pivots in maybe worn?

I to have a slight problem with string hanging on the right side and everything is in adjustment as well. Although my baler is a 275 i think the knotters are identical. I found what helped mine most was a little tension on the clip next to the twine box. Mine is real sensitive though,to much tension and the side that never misses (left side)starts hanging. I have spent a lot of time on this problem.I wondered about the slack on the knife arm as well and wondered if a little brazing and filing to work it out would help. Any suggestions ?

Hi Kelly. Knots hanging on the billhook? Starting about 3 or 4 years ago, this became New Holland's number one tying problem, barr none. My co-worker and I have put quite a bit of energy into solving this problem because New Holland's field service reps do NOT acknowledge that this problem exists. It is very frustrating. Here are some of our findings. 1. Make sure the little clamp plate on the side of the bale box is as loose as possible. Just tighten that little spring so you feel a slight drag on the string, and I do mean slight. 2. Do not bale the bales any tighter than neccessary. Cranking down the press really adds to the problem. 3. Using 7200 twine makes it worse as well. 4. Do you believe in prayer? (LOL) The funny thing is Kelly, not all knotters suffer from this problem. I can have 2 knotters that appear to be exactly the same and one works and the other one won't. I just want to assure you that the problem is not wear in the knotter frame or the knifearm bore. There is one other thing, but I'll go over that if these things don't help. Steve

Steve.
what about the trash build up idea. It always seems that there is excesive chaff up under the knife arm when it hangs a knott.
The twine tensioner is a good idea. I bet I have it tighter than what you sugested.
Now that you mention it. the part of the twine that still has the knott attached is the part that comes up with the needle.
The chances of me duplicating this in test conditions are almost nill. It appears a combonation of factors have to happen for a knott to hang.
Some time before spring I will drag her into the shop and pull the knotter stack. I lucked out and got in on the $148 new knotter assemblies from New Holland. I should have got 3 or 4 for that price. All the local guys found out I can rebuild a NH knotter. So guess who get called?

It is interesting that Steve says not to bale them any tighter (heavier) than neccesary. I solved the problem on my old 67 by making the bales heavier thus pulling the twine off the bill hook, have baled approximately 15,000 the past year or so since I did that and have never had one hang since. Mine was always hanging on the left (outside).

Price might have went back up. I got mine for $148
Last year they where about $400.
So maybe the good days are over for us now and the price is going to go back up.
I can call my dealer next week and see what thier price is.

New Holland has corrected what was obviously a pricing error. The figure of $280 is very near the current sugested list. If your knotter frame is not severely worn or broken outright, it probably does not need replacement.

Do you mean that the knotter casting is worn? Can you wiggle the knife arm back and forth in its socket?

I am not sure yet. But thats where I have to go now. All the specs are correct. It should not be hanging knots.
I am also going to check the cam gear that moves the knife arm. Maybe there is a groove in it.
I have a couple of spare ones that have less bales on them so might as well.
It is just strange. The left knotter never missed a bale the whole year, not one. That right knotter just pitched a fet about every 60 bales or so.
I want to put a thrower on this machine and cant have that.

Kelly. I would forget the thrower idea and go with basket wagon instead. Been ther done that with both and after trying basket wagon I would never use a thrower again. Just my thoughts. Do what works for you. Rick

I would like that, just not in the budget for those right now.
I'd buy 2 if I could find some for $500 each.
I already have a thrower and 2 racks. Just need to build walls on them.

A basket & a catch wagon run about the same money around here - $1500 or so. Sell your 2 wagons & get a basket. :)

Love the basket!

I think maybe I will tough it out for another year with the hand racking. I still need to buy a haybine this year.
One thing I like about the basket Idea is you can dump them quick in the barn and get back out to the field for more.
Unloading time is a real big issue for me. I have had to stop baling a few times to unload some hay and got my hay rained on. NO GOOD!!!
Even with a thrower rack you have to unload by hand.
Also My customers dont really like the idea of picking up thier share in the field. Being able to just dump a basket in thier barn so they can rick it at thier leasure would be a plus for me getting more bussiness.
