Does anyone know the required horsepower to operate this machine? I currently own a 32 HP tractor which suits me perfect for the small 10 acre pasture I have. Came across what seems to be a good deal and was wanting some info. Thanks.

We're using a NH 268 behind a '49 JD B. The hp is in the 24 range on a good day. We pull baler and hay wagon on some hilly fields. Also tried this with a Farmall 200, and ran out of traction a few times, but hot horsepower. The extra 1000# or so is very helpful! If your tractor has the weight, you should be OK.

There has been a 270 on this farm since about 1964 and it's been pulled by an IHC 300 tractor 90% of the time, about 36 hp baling 2-5,000 bales every year. Usually onto a wagon & we do have some hills.

As Steve said, would help if you mentioned the tractor. Weight of the tractor is more of an issue than hp. The baler takes ~14, moving through the field takes ~12, and pulling a rack takes ~7. Takes some weight on the tractor & good brakes to stop it all tho, or pull it up hills! ;)

Also, live pto is real big help for baling. can do without, but makes it a whole lot less fun.

Love that 270, it's not as fast as newer ones & has the wide-space pickup, but has been very dependable.

I had wondered about that..... I have a NH268 I haven't tried yet and I had wondered if my old 9N would pull it even by itself on level ground. I have a rack and a small retriever wagon, but I really can't see the old girl being able to pull both the baler and the rack.

Kevin, I live in Amish country and I can tell you first hand that they ran that model baler with 14 horsepower 2 cylinder Wisconsin engines. I assure you that your 32 horsepower tractor is more than enough. If however, you are going to put large rack wagons behind the baler and fill them, and your current tractor is the size of a modern compact tractor, you will want to reconsider and put a heavier tractor in front of the baler. But if you bale the hay and drop the bales on the ground, your tractor is fine. Steve
