I acquired a 461 haybine a few months ago and I am planning to replace the guards and put a new sickle in it this winter. I found a sickle on ebay with part #143609. Will this sickle work, and what type of guards do I need. I will be cutting coastal and sudan near Fort Worth, Texas. There are not many rocks, if any, in the fields I will be cutting. Another thing I have to fix on this haybine is the cable that goes to the spring that puts tension on the rollers. The cable is broke on the left side of the spring. Should I just splice it where it broke or replace the cable. Thanks in advance. Brad

Brad, that sickle assembly will NOT work in your 461. That is a 9 ft sickle assembly for a 451 0r 456 mower. Yes, it is ok to splice that cable. Steve

Brad;

I had that cable break on my 461 about 12 years ago and I put a turnbuckle in the space between the end of the spring and the wheel on the left side. It's still there today and I use my 461`probably 60+ hours each summer. As far as the sickle, I don't have the # handy but the sickle out of the 469 and maybe others will work you just have to cut about 6" off the end and reinstall the section and a half. I get my guards from Big R and again I don't have the # handy. If needed I could get the # for you this weekend.
The 461 is a great swather, I've had very good luck with mine and have cut all kinds of hay.

Good Luck!
