Had one 20+ year ago, never any pickup problems, tying problems are related to wore out slides on plunger the same as with New Holland, cannot be adjusted out, replace the slides and will tie

I have an IH 46 that ran good in itstime. It is available free to someone who needs any parts except the knotters and needles, which will be missing. Everything works.

I don't know about a 46, but I once had a 45 I bought used and soon found out why the guy sold it. If you want little piles of hay laying on the ground with pieces of twine by them, buy a IH 45. After one frustrating year, I backed mine into a swamp! The only thing I kept was the twine rolls. Larry

I second what T213R says. I had a 46 once which we affectionately referred to as "The Anti-Christ". It may have been okay when it was new, but it was nothing but a headache by the time I got it--pickup problems were common and it missed more bales than it tied regardless of how we tried to adjust it. Replacing it with a JD 24T was the best farm machinery move I ever made.

I cant comment on the IH balers other han what I have read here. I have heard the IH 45 is junk but the IH 46 was a better machine. How much better I dont know.

I would recomend a NH baler over a JD baler. Not because they are better. I personally would not hesitate to use a 14T or a 24T. Real good machines.
The diffence is in replacement parts. Both balers are going to wear out the same parts. NH parts will cost you 1/2 to 1/3rd the price of JD parts.

Example: Needle for a NH 68 is $58 same for JD 14t is $114.
New knotter assembly for NH68 $148 JD 14t is around $500.
You can save the cost of the baler just in parts prices.
No matter what one you buy you will need some parts.

We used one from 1964 to 2000 when I quit farming. It was a very good baler and still working fine when I sold it.

I have an old 46 baler it will miss a bale once in awhile but makes a good bale not to hard to work on. I had a 14 t jd had lots of problems with would not own another one. Had no.12 mf not good either. Never owned a nh but they seem to to have their share of troubles too. From what i read on this forum.

I have never had any direct experience with one of these, but considering the large numbers which were sold, they must have been a pretty good unit.

I think that a #46 IHC baler, when properly painted up makes a GREAT companion piece for a restored H or SM Farmall, at a show. Why would you want one to bale with? They don't have a good reputatiopn for tying bales consistantly and are generally unreliable. Old balers that are red (and that are worth having) say NEW HOLLAND on them somewhere. Old GREEN balers that say JOHN DEERE are also pretty worthwhile balers, and like the NH, they still have technitians who can properly adjust one to run properly. Brands other than JD or NH, and which have 40-50 years on them do not usually have any kind of dealer support, or even a mechanic who can remember what one looks like, let alone fix. Some of the older balers weren't the"best of class" when new either.
