acquired a 3tp wood splitter need a hyd pump and directional valve. I am leaning toward a PTO hyd pump, any and all input appreciated. New at this game.

my tank is about 5 gal, its an old air tank offof a big forklift that had air brakes... get the valve that has the reverse detent, after you return it to reverse it will stay till it returns then return to netral, give ya time to get another pc. of wood..slow is not all bad!my other pc. of advise is to put an oil filter in the return line,NH has all this stuff...i've got 3/4 inch lines also..

I'd like to get a pto driven wood splitter, but neither of my tractors have a remote. Does anyone know where to get a pto driven splitter that has it's own pump for a good price. The ones I've seen are as much as the splitters with a gas engine, and I don't want yet another engine to maintain.

The pto pump & resevior are going to run close to $500 in any way, shape, or form, instead of 2 hyd hoses & couplers for $30. So, that's not really able to change much.

You might want to get a seperate pto pump setup that can be used for other things, than a 'dedicated' pto pump built together with the splitter. More flexability for your money.

I have one that I run off the tractors hydraulics on my Ford 2000. The Ford system is not a high GPM but has great pressure. It will split anything I have ever put in it. I have a pressure gauge on it and it will peg 2500 PSI anytime you want. The valve I have came from Northern Tool and is about $50 and is made for a splitter. At my age the tractor hydraulics work as fast as I do. I agree it takes an extra 15 seconds per stroke but the investment also gives me hydraulic outlets on the tractor that I use for many other things. Just a thought depending on how much wood you have to split.

I made a hydraulic PACK for a 3000 Ford using a pump, twin spool valve and tank salvaged from a Farmhand F11 loader to power a Hesston 3ton stack mover.

Running it slow is not a bad thing, in fact, it is safer this way. I have seen first hand what happens when you try to run a splitter too fast, I had a piece of fire wood that had quite a few knots in it, and when the ram hit it, that chunk of wood became airborn, landed on the roof of the shed I was next to, and came rolling back down, to land at my feet. I slowed the engine down after that.

Northern Tool has a 540 RPM PTO Prince pump. I've got 'em on both my Woods backhoe and my splitter. No complaints at all.

They also have 1000 RPM pumps if you need it.

Around $300, if I recall correctly.

540 RPM pumps on both, roughly 5 gallon reservoirs. Backhoe maybe a little more, splitter maybe a little less.

These are store-bought machines, came with the pumps already on them. The on-board pump on my John Deere 750 doesn't flow enough to run them. Also, the tractor uses Transmission-Hydraulic Oil, and uses the transmission as a sump, and I'm not a big fan of cycling the fluid temp for fear of condensation in the transmission.

Probably illogical on my part, but hey, what I got works great!

I use one of the pumps on my spliter, keep the lines as large as possible, if you have 3/4 return fittings use 3/4 lines or it;ll be a slow machine. You'll want to have a res that will cover one minute of pump operation, i.e. 20 gpm pump = 20 gal cap. I would recomend a 20 gpm pump, about same price as the 11 gpm but you won't have to get high rpms out of your tractor to get some preformance.
