The other day we were discussing why the Vermeer Rebel used less Horsepower than the XL. I stated that the bale turned slower in the baler than the Xl. You replied that they turned the same speed. This got the gears turning in my head. I went to our books and did some research.

The Rebel gearbox has a 17 tooth gear mating to a 23 tooth gear. The gearbox output shaft has a 17 tooth sprocket on it that then powers the 24 tooth sprocket on the drive rollers. This gives a 47.7% reduction in speed coming out of the tractor. (17/23)*(17/24)=.523

The XL series from serial #1 to #1214 has a 23 tooth mating to a 17 tooth in the gearbox and a 23 tooth drive sprocket mating to a 24 tooth on the drive rollers. The gives a 29% increase of speed. (23/17)*(23/24)=1.29

At serial #1215 Vermeer changed the drive sprocket to a 17 tooth, to slow the baler down some. Resulting in a 4.2% reduction in speed. (23/17)*(17/24)=.958
