Would like a used hammer mill with infeed roller to use for composting old hay (& weeds) left in barn and for light brush and leaves. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Greywolf, I live about 80-90 miles south of the MN border-Cedar Falls/Waterloo area. I have a little two wheel trailer rated at 1000lbs. Where are you and how much do you think the mill weighs? Are there any screens extra? Tire size? PTO all there? Leonard @ 319 268 1362 or 319 474 2721 or 1106 West Third Cedar Falls, IA 50613

For a hammermill with infeed rollers you'll probably need to get a "modern" (0-30yrs) feed grinder/mixer, like Gehl, NH ect. the hay infeed rollers were an option on these (at least Gehl has them) (ALTHOUGH I have feed them w/o the infeed, by hand one bale slice at a time. little more dangerous and works the tractor pretty good for an instant when the slice hits the mill) problem with grinder/mixers is the tank could be a pain to deal with and the cost could be more however as the small farms go so does the need for these units and thus the $ drops. some of the old 50's hammermill grinders didn't have tanks and had a small blower with a pipe and cylone on top that would either feed a bin or bag. These would work if you can find one but I don't think any had an infeed for hay. Tim's suggestion of a small forage harvester would work. a hay pickup head would be easier to feed than the corn head. and as he mentioned some amish have made infeed conveyors to make them work like the old silo fillers. BE CAREFULL!!!! as with the grinders these are in less and less demand and therefore may be resonable at auction and may be less $ than grinder ?(usually more resonable at auction than dealers for most old farm equip) an advantage of the hammermill is you can control the size of grinding with the size of the screens. I would wonder how well the forage harvester would work on tree leaves??? good luck

IaGuy, not sure just where you are in IA. I'm in southern MN just a 100 miles north of the border.

I have a Bear Cat hammer mill with an apron feed table on a factory 2 wheel cart PTO driven. It's been standing for a while, not sure how sound it is.

If interested give me a shout. Will be willing to let it go reasonable (cheap??).

You might have better results with a pull-type forage harvester. It would have more capacity than a hammermill, plus you'd have the blower to make bigger piles or blow into a truck if you wanted. You'd have to make a conveyor table of some sort, or buy one from an Amish machine shop, to feed the machine safely.
