Is anyone familiar with the NH 553 skid steer. I'm going to look at one tomorrow and was wondering how good of a machine it is i.e. hp, lift capacity, reliability, when was it made, what is a reasonble price for one in good shape? I will be using it for general use around the farm. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi Phil. Yes, I am familiar with this machine. Perhaps too much. The L553 came out roughly in 1987, give or take a year. It has a 43 HP Kubota diesel. They were very popular and they are decent machines. The knock on them is oil leaks. It seems like as soon as you fix one leak, another one starts. Not major leaks, just little ones. The biggest culprits are the axle seals. Also, many of the Hydraulic pump and motor fittings are oring and they seem to be leak prone for some reason. However, all in all, they are not too bad, but of course they are getting some age on them so take a look at the hours. In this area of the country, a decent one will bring $6000 to $7000 dollars. Steve
