FORD 501 MOWER ?

Hello All,

I found a 501 7ft sickle mower I'm intrested in buying. Just got a few questions. First what is the purpose of the link that mounts to the left side lift arm? I have a 1994 ford 3930 tractor and the lift arms are 3/4" thick unlike the older model ford tractors. Will it clamp to my thicker lift arm? When was the paint color changed from red to blue cause this one is red and I've looked at both colors. Don't see a ID tag on it where were they placed location wise.

I recommend you go to your Ford New Holland dealer and look at the operator Manual and parts manual before you buy it. There are a lot of different ways to attach the 501 depends on the tractor 8n and similar tractors use one clamp on each arm, the 4000 series use only one clamp on the left also about a dozen other attaching styles. I use my 501 on and Allis 5045 with the one clamp on left arm. you should check out the attaching systems before you buy

The color probably changed along with the tractors in 1962. We had a Blue 501 we purchased new in the mid sixties. There were clamps on both sides. One side served as a stabilizer, the other operated the linkage that helped to lift the cutterbar. They are good mowers and mount easily to older Fords and Massey Fergusons. We replaced our's with a NH after replacing our Ford tractor. The NH will fit a wider range of tractors.

I dont know if the color change was with the start of the 501s or sometime in the model year but what I've seen was 501s-blue and the earlier ford 14-84s? where red.

The link creates a 'triangle' so when you raise the 3pt, that little arm lifts the far end of the bar up off the ground. You should be able to modify the clamp to work, will take a bit of metal working.

I've only seen red original ones, thought blue was someone with a paint brush & original red underneath.

Model/serial on mine are next to the round frame on the C channel breakaway section, rivoted plate.

No, for the arm I am talking about for hooking up to a typical real Ford tractor, there is only one tie arm on the left side. This tie arm on top goes through a ball & eye, and onto a clamp that clamps about 1/3 way on the left tractor lower 3pt arm. The other end of that short tie rod goes to a big pivot on the bottom of the left tube frame, and operates the pivot that is chained to the mower bar - with a long threaded rod. Raising the 3pt changes the angles, and pivots the pivot, & raises or lowers the far end of the bar.

There are different configurations of mounting on different models of Ford mowers, but the 501 has always been like this that I know of. There can be 2 very small clamps right by the 3pt pins, I've never had one like that, not sure how they hook up or what they are for - always heard 'for mounting on non-Ford tractors' when I asked, but don't know.
