JD 480 haybine opinions?

I am looking for a haybine to cut about 25 acres of hay. I found a JD 480 in excellent condition for $350. I haven't seen many 480's around. Do they work well? Any known problems? Thanks for the advise.

I also have used a 480 for 2 seasons now. I bought it for $150, and put another $300 or so fixing it up (that includes new tires). It has been a good machine for me. It isn't a speed demon, but is much faster than my 7 ft sickle bar and crimper were. The one weak point I know of is a splined coupler between the PTO shaft and the gearbox. Mine ground itself out when the sickle got stuck. I was able to find Deere's fix for this at a junkyard - a replacement for the coupler Deere called a shear-bolt assembly. You should look for that. I cut about 15 acres of hay a year, so this is about as expensive as I can justify. I would jump on one for $350 in good shape, if I were you.

I have a 480 (didn't think there were any others out there). I like it a lot. I bought mine cheap and I knew that the rolls were not too good. I bought it as a replacement for sickle mower. Mine works very well as a mower but doesn't crimp well. I just run a crimper after mowing and that works very well.
I have never had a problem with the rolls wrapping and I have been able to find replacement parts. I just put in a new sickle and it cuts great. The sickle is the same one as used in the newer JD mower - 1208, or 1209? Good luck with it if you get it. If you have any questions about it, email me.

In my experience with one, they don't float over the ground that well, the conditioner rolls tend to wrap up on this machine more so than later models, and a lot of its parts are no longer available from Deere.

I've only had wrapping problems when I was going to fast for it - I usually have it in first gear direct behind my Oliver 1600. I only go to second in very light hay. I haven't had much trouble with parts, either. You can get the sickles and teeth from Deere, and I am lucky enough to be relatively close to Stamm Equipment (Wayland, MI), which has a couple of carcasses.

I have one thats been sitting in the woods for some years. I am going to plow and seed the feilds this spring and wanted to get the 480 running again. I was wondering if anybody might have pictures of a 480 that is complete. I'm not sure if I am missing shrouds/ect. Its nice to know that others are still finding parts.
