baling hay Question for Hay Dr

I saw a discussion on here the other day and have just been wondering about baling time. I realize all kinds of factors affect baling time. I have over the past ten years baled about 20000 roll bales of hay. I currently have a New Holland 648 baler. Before that I had a New Holland 848. I use then because the dealer is about 10 minutes away and have been good to help me with any problems. I pull it with a 60 Hp tractor. In all that time the best I have been able to do is 35 rolls in an hour and I was making them about 5 feet in diameter. That was under what I considered ideal conditions. (Hay was in a quantity that made a perfect size windrow, hay was just right moisture, field was such that there were not a lot of turns and so forth) Under other conditions it is hard to get more than 15 rolls in an hour. I am not trying to start a color war but just wondered how this compared with time per bale from you experience. Thanks in advance.

Craig: Having rolled a few bales in my day, and I rather doubt that many are doing more than 35 per hour. Think about it a bale every 2 minutes. I'd be willing to bet the average is closer to 15 per hour or one every 4 minutes.

Hugh is right in line on this. I bale my share every year, and in perfect conditions, meaning large fields with few turns and good windrows, I generally bale a 5x5 or 5x6 bale about every 3 minutes or so. But on most fields, I slow down a bit and get about 15 an hour.

That was kinda what I was thinking. I have only baled that much hay that fast a couple of times in 11 years of baling. And then everything was perfect conditions to do so. Thanks for the replies.
