Depends on model of planter, 246, 2 row 3 pt hitch; 290, 2 row pull type; 999, 2 row horse drawn ar tractot drawn and could be modified to 3 pt hitch, also could be a tool bar planter or lister planter; each is entirely different, we need to have complete information to help you and the 290; 490, 494 did not have a cable on the markers. The 450 did use a cable, and I have 999, 290, 450, 490, 494, 494A planters setting here.

If this is set up the same as a 4 row planter your problem may be in the trip mech. in the back. Streched cables. Or the flatbar with the hooks on the ends need replaced. Had the same problem with the 4 row planter. was to many years ago to recall the proper names of the parts. But you will have to open up that trip mech to find out. There was a trick to replacing the cables so the manual is real handy at this time. Hope this helps & good luck

Let me test my memory, has been over 40 years since my Dad had one of these. Is there a small handle-like arm on the hitch ball with a light chain attatchd? This should be attached tight to drawbar so the handle points straight out to the side. I don't remember if it points to right or left, but same side as the chain. When turning it pivots with the tractor, pulling or releasing tension on the chain. This somehow trips the mechanism that controls which marker should drop. When all else failed, some people dis-abled the system & let both markers drop all the time. Of course, on the first time across a field, the marker next to the fence would have to be tied up. Clear as mud, but covers the ground.
