Could someone tell me what a six year old JD 348 square baler is worth? And what are some good brands of round and square balers that I can use with a 47 hp tractor. Thank you

Neighbor bought a used 348 wire tie for $6500 few years ago. New 338 is about $12,000.

I've got a 336, pull it with everything from a 5600 Ford (at 60 hp and change) to a 2090 Case (at 105hp). Even used it with a 4000 Ford when dad bought it new back in the 70's.

Bought lots of square hay bailers, we give 20 dollars a ton for them, cut em up for scrap. Leave the bidding to the experts. Go to a junk yard and get one for next to nuthin.

Max, before you 'scrap" any more old square balers, you might want to hook up with me. I buy and sell used equipment. I have a list of over 30 names, that are looking for cheap square balers. They are guys that have small acrage's and want to put up a few hundred bales a year. They don't want new or big stuff. I get a good price out of them usually. This baler mentioned in the original post, will be for my use, should I be able to buy it. I have a new Vermeer round baler, and a very nice JD 336 square baler, plus a NH 273, for a "back-up". I do some custom baling, and about 175 acres of hay for sale to "horse people" in my area. They want square bales. We also do about 4000 square bales of straw each summer. I sell it to landscape contractors primarily. There is a BIG market for square balers. So all the ones you "cut up" are just a waste of money, and your time. Call me, (E-mail me) when you get any you want to "dispose of". I'll haul them away, and save your acetylene and hacksaw blades. John

Hey Indy, what tractor are you running the 336 with? I know of a broken 336 here local that I may be able to get cheap and was wondering if the Ollie 77 standard would work well with it?

Normally, it's behind either a 2440 Deere, (60HP), or a 4440 Deere (130HP) The 4440 is the smallest "cab tractor" I have. In hot weather it wins by default. The 2440 will handle it real well. On one occation this summer, I was forced to use it with an old Massey Ferguson 50. It is rated at 32HP. You definately knew it was back there, but it baled about 2000 bales of wheat straw. (Very slowly) I'm not sure what Deere's "recomended HP" is on that baler. My manual is at our other farm. I would think that your "Ollie" would handle it though. (Even if it didn't, that is a good selling baler.) Hope this helps, John

I ran a 336 with ejector with an MF65 gas with no problem, so your 77 should be able to do it. Does your Ollie have live PTO?

Yep, hand lever by the seat. It must weigh almost 7000 lbs. with the loader but it's only about 35-40 horse I think. You still think it'd do ok for the flat ground I bale on without any additional hooked on? Loren

You'll be fine. From what I recall, JD recommended 35HP min. A guy a few miles away ran one with a Farmall M (that had an M&W hand clutch for "live" PTO), until he quit last year. He pulled a wagon behind his. My MF65 only weighs about 5000 lbs. Never lacked on HP (45), but sometimes the wagon and baler together could get to pushing it down a hill.

On the round baler. I believ in the vermeer line. I fyou want to spend the money get a new Rebel 5400 11000-14000 depending on dealer. If you want a used one get a 504 model. The other good option ia NH

Sounds like you're heading to the same auction I am, next saturday. If you want to know what that 6 year old 348 baler is worth, just watch to see when I stop bidding. There's your answer.

I have a sign in my "office" that says, "If you live by the bibles teachings, treat everyone like they're your best friend, respect everyone, and work hard every day, when you die, you'll go to INDIANA" Can't argue with that. John
