I am going to be looking for a Vermier 504 this next year. Do you think I would be able to find one for about $3000 or so? I want to run it on a Farmall 400. A little less than 50 hp.
What can you tell me about these that I should look at?

Given the price range you have specified you should be able to purchase a good Vermeer 504G or a MF1440 (same baler). Realize you will be purchasing a bale that was MFG in the early to mid-80's. These baler are open throat design. They make a tight bale of hay. You will find that most of these balers have electric twine ties. You will need one set of exterior hydraulics. Minimum HP is 40HP. Start checking now the best deals are in the Fall and Winter.

Whats the difference between the Letters on the 504?
There is a guy up in Mora, Mn that has a 504F that he thinks $2700 is to little for.

Actually there were few 504F balers made. The 504F has hydraulic and spring tension where the 504G baler has spring tension only. The 504F recommends 45 HP but is basically the same baler as the 504G. They both were made at the same time. If the 504F baler has the closed loop hydraulic tension, auto bale limiter, and 5 bar pickup it is a 504 Super F. $2700 is in the range of fair market value for the south but the condition and features is not known.
