I have seen a lot of talk about this mower and how reliable it has been over the years.I have the chance to buy one but was wondering if it would be something that I could put behind my IH 300 utility.I have a quick hitch draw bar. Could it bolt up to that? thanks dave m.

We put one on our 350. You have to remove the breakaway apparatus then it bolts right up. We did have to drill 1 hole in the draw bar to match the 2 holes on the mower. Works good.

Manual shows a number of combinations. Sales brochure claims it will fit any tractor. From practical experience: I blocked the mower up behind my SMTA, took a lot of measurements and then took a sketch to a welder with some iron from the scrap yard. Had to get a longer drive shaft but it works great. Buy the mower, it WILL fit your tractor with a little patience. Now, I've said it before and I will say it again...keep those fingers out of the way of the knives when raising the bar.

The number 5 had so many different hook ups that would interchange by removing the front breakaway pivot bolt and pulling it loose from the clamp. Some had a flat bar, others had the JD quickhitch. If you can find an operator's manuel for the #5, atleast the old ones, showed the variations. Might help ya to figure out how to hook it up.

Dan,

If you have the drawbar for the quick hitch, the mower would then bolt right to the bottom of it.

That's how we did it years ago, anyway. Nice old mowers.

JD made hitches to hook the #5 to most tractors of the era of different makes. Not sure if they had anything for a quick hitch IH, they had their own quickhitch on some of these mowers. Generally you can adapt the hitch to most tractors. They are a good mower.
