I bought a used brushhog (rotary mower) and hooked it up to my 9N. It spins good and my orc works fine. Problem is I see a lot of wobble in the u-joint (knuckle in the drive shaft) It deviates 4-6" and looks and feels pretty scary. When the lift is set just right (Zanethang) it spins smoothly but the slightest change causes it to imbalance and wobble.

??? How much wobble is safe/normal ? Any way to reduce it ?

Thanks for all the help.

Are your U-joints in phase? If they are not, they will vibrate like crazy and will quickly wear out one or both of the joints.

As you look at the shaft, both of the U-joint yokes should be in the same plane, not 90 degrees from eachother. If they aren't right, pull out the front half of the shaft and put it back in correctly.

If the joints themselves are loose, they are not hard to change. Take the shaft to the parts store to get the proper replacements. Good luck!

Ralph, Whatever you do, don't use it until you find out what is wrong and fix it. 4-6 inches of motion on the shaft says there is something really wrong. If a joint breaks, you'll have shaft whipping around and that is really dangerous.

Ralph, if it is smooth sometimes and way out other times it sounds like your U joints are shot. Sometimes they are still tight enough so as to be not noticable at a glance. I bet if you check them out you'll find one is shot.

ralph, make sure the shaft itself is not bent,, i've seen people not have the top bar or chain adjusted right ,then pick the mower up to high only to bend the pto driveshaft ($140)mistake... take the rear guard off & see if the rear u-joint is shot tsc carries the repair u-joints ,take the old ones with ya

That much wobble sounds scary! I would be looking for broken, cracked, worn components. I would be afraid of dangerous failure - at the worst time. Thorough inspection called for!

Replace the U joint if it has play or binding. There is probably 2 U joints in the PTO driveline maybe the other one is binding or sloppy.
