Can It Be Welded?

I have an old Ford/Dearborn manure spreader and the other day with a full load of manure the axle broke. In looking at the break I can tell it has been partially broke for quite some time. It looks like about 1.5 inch steel rod about 6 foot long. Can something like this be welded and still hold up or should I just scrap the spreader.
Thanks for any comments.

rustyfarmall is right, it can be welded and if there is room you can use schedule 80 1 1/2" pipe over the weld to make it stronger. If the spreader isn't shot it's definetly worth the fix. Even if you have to have another shaft made. Have you priced spreaders lately? Good luck.

I am sure it could be welded, depending on where it broke, you might want to add a little reinforcement. You might also want to check out replacing the axle, 1 1/2 inch cold rolled round stock is readily available. Do you have a steel supply warehouse nearby? If not, check with a machine or welding shop. You might also check with a salvage operator who deals in combines, lots of shafts used in those things.
