Rusty Dusty Baler

I was having a look-see at my parts JD 14T baler and even though it is mighty rusty and has a few springs broken, it is otherwise complete. I am thinking that I might (for kicks) see if it bales before I start using parts off of it.

My question is - what is the worse basket case baler you have ever thought would NEVER bale and yet after a little lub and adjustment, worked like a champ?

Thanks,
Bill

I just bought a rusty dusty baler, an old 1957 model Minneapolis Moline 760 Bale Master. It has been sitting a long time, but doesn't seem to be to worse for wear. I am going to get it up to snuff this winter.
Most important thing about an old baler is to lube it up as much as possible before you get serious about giving it a try. Also, I would run it by hand to make sure it will go through a cycle. Then when you hook up the PTO start it up easy and gradually increase to throttle.

If everything seems good, then you can put a little money in it. On all old balers be sure to check the bale chamber for rust out, check the pick up and teeth, the auger and knotters for abuse and missing or broken parts. I make it my rule to look at the knives, if they are simply dull, sharpen or replace them. If they are beat up real bad, it is likely that the baler has eaten a wood or metal post or two.

Also, don't buy a baler that has a rotton ancient bale in the chamber BEFORE removing the bale and having a real good look.

New Holland 269 bale chamber had holes rusted out had set outside with hay in it for three years I took it to a baker mechanic he said forget it too far gone. I poured deisel on the knotters let them set sprayed pentrating oil on them greased everything up threaded it put new shear pins in turned the fly wheel by hand tripped the knotter it tied. Baled 1500 bales the first year all to gether baled a little better than 5000 bales before it fell apart.

The problem with doing that is then, if it works you'll have to go look for another parts baler. Have known guys who bought parts tractors that they used for years. Also know that it is hard to tear down a piece of equipment that looks like ti might still work ok. Good luck on it.

Well Bill, I wouldn't call my NH 80 Baler a basket case - hadn't run in 25 years and the engine wires had been eaten by some vermin. My neighbor and especially my wife didn't think I would ever get the motor to run let alone make bales. Well I did and it does (for past 8 years) Just last week I found a rusty hulk Model 80 in a junk yard that might yield spare needles but very little else - now that is a basket case! Dick Davis
