At an auction today, my husband purchased an antique farming implement. He doesn't know precisely what it is called, so I thought I'd try to find out for him.

The wheels are the metal type. The two in front are smaller and closer to the center of the rig. The two back wheels are larger and sit as any back tires on a tractor would.

The main part of this implement goes into the air, from back to front. It almost looks like a strange staircase. It looks as though it might have been used to send hay from wagon to mow, but I can't be sure.

I know that's not a very good description, but that's the best I can do from memory....too dark and cold to go out right now. :-)

Oh, if this helps any---he brought it home chained to a 1940 Allis Chalmers B. So, I guess it couldn't be extremely heavy.

So, what did he buy?

Thank you for reading this rambling.

If you don't even know what the "thing" is, why would you buy it?

I did not buy it; my husband did. He has a number of antique implements and thought this would be a good addition. He got it for less than they usually go for at auction. Other than that, I couldn't tell you. :-) (I was bidding in a different auction ring.)

Sounds like a hay loader. It was used to pick up loose hay and stack it on a wagon. As the pile on the wagon got higher, a man (or maybe two) with pitchforks packed it down.
