JD 337 Square Bales

I have a JD 337 square hay baler. I am having trouble maintaining uniformity with the shape of the bales it produces. Although I've adjusted the feeder fingers to bring more hay to the left (far) side of chamber, I continue to get banana shaped bales. Timing seems to be good, windrows are uniform and consistent.

The only thing left I know to do, is to check the clearance tolerance and sharpness of the hayknives, and to make sure the plunger is tracking true.

Any advice?

Thanks

To Everyone who's responded, thanks for all the suggestions. I played with the machine a bit more and did find increase volumn of hay, and increasing the tension helped dramatically.

Thanks

I have a 337 baler, have the same problem when baling a single row. When bannanas come out(after ajusting fork teeth etc) I found feeding the swath so it is hugging the left side of the pickup(looking from the back) fixes it. In other words the feed is coming up the pickup straight into the chamber coming in contact with only a foot of the auger. This almost always corrects the problem for me. With a heavy single row or two together I don't have this problem and feed the baler normaly. If it makes a difference??, I bale alfalfa and clover with mine. MK

I looked up your problem im my 336-337-338 technical manual and it list 4 possible reasons for "banana shaped bale"

1. Ground speed of baler too slow - Increase ground speed / reduce baler rpm.
2. Windrow too small - Make larger windrows.
3. Bale tension too loose - Increase bale tension.
4. Baling extremely light hay - Place feeder teeth in bottom hole. Make larger windrows.
Hope this helps.

Does your 337 have the hydraulic bale tensioner? Mine does, and uneven tension is not one of my problems, but when I get banana bales it is usually due to the amount of hay entering the bale chamber being less than adequate. Have you tried going faster, so as to put more hay/second into the bale chamber?

Hi, Try doubling the size of the windrow. You must keep the bail chamber full to get a uniform bale. Bill

Very true, but sometimes the amount of crop varies significantly within the same field. If I double windrow everything to the point that I ALWAYS get sufficient hay into the chamber, sometimes, usually most of the time, I'll be getting MORE hay than I really want.

Vary the amount of hay in each rake swath. In thick spots I may skip a section of windrow or rake less than an full rake width on the thick parts. Doesn't matter how good a job you do on everything else, if the bales aren't right it's all wasted effort if you are selling hay. I like to rake in parallel lines. Has really helped my consistency. I usually try to may 5 passes around each field and roll that. Then cut, rake, and bale in parallel lines for square baling.

I have a 328. I would try playing with the bale tension. sometimes the springs are uneven, and tightening the same amount on both sides makes unperfect bales. just thighten down the longer side of the bale a couple extra turns and see if it helps. this might not be the exact right fix, but if it works then its ok for now.
