You want to plant about 25-32,000 corn seeds per acre, and the corn prefers it _very_ consistant for depth & seed spacing. Corn is very fussy that way. Each stalk counts. Hybred seed costs $60-120 for 88,000 seeds - you don't want to waste it! Oats, wheat, and other small grains want lots, lots more seeds per acre, but are not so fussy about depth & spacing. A little wasted seed too deep or thin or thick does not matter too much. The seed costs a couple bucks per bushel, and you plant 2-3 bu per acre - not so critical if you waste a bit. Soybeans are somewhere in between. They like it pretty uniform, but they are able to compensate by branching out if too thin or handle a bit of crowding ok. Conventional bin run seed costs $7-12 an acre, but Roundup Ready cost $25 an acre or more. So you will see both planted & drilled soybeans, and each has it's good & bad points. So, you can plant corn, soybeans, pumpkins, with a corn planter. You can cultivate or spray for weeds, or both. You can plant oats, wheat, rye, barley, etc. with a drill. You can probably plant soybeans with it as well, depends on the drill. The small grains will probably outgrow the weeds, and you can get by without spraying much of the time - you can't cultivate. You _must_ spray the soybeans if you drill them, or weeds will smother them. --->Paul
