Small Tree Spade?

Ever seen or built a small tree spade suitable for a lawn tractor or small farm tractor. Don't want to hire hand labor and I am not man enough to handle about 4 huge spadefuls of dirt at one time!

There's quite a few different brands and sizes of these being made. Some are hydraulic, others you use a hydraulic hammer to pound the spade into the ground.

The reason i never bought one is they are spendy!!! I just dig my bigger trees and bushes with my loader tractor. Not as handy as a spade, but my loader tractor is paid for!!!

Tree Spade, first I have seen anything like these before, great idea. The only ones I have ever seen are on the back of 2 ton trucks?
I am not sure about the manual work of driving the spades into the ground! I wonder if they have hydraulic units or if there is a way to put rams on each spade?

Terry, The Caretree variety of treespade is one of many that are Hydraulicy driven. My best friend that operates one of the priemer tree farms here in central Texas has 2 of them. One on a 753-Bobcat it will do a rootball of 36 in.(aprox wt of ball 250lbs) trees up to 4 1/2 in diameter. The other is on a 955 Cat Traxcavator. This one will do a rootball of about 60 in ( 1 ton in wt.) trees up to 7 in. diameter.
Here in central Texas our digging condition are way less than perfect. Rocks are the norm. We have gotten into roots that it took a lot of extra work to cut the extended roots. I have serious doubts if the hammer driven kind will work very satisfactory at all. Maby if you are digging baby trees < than 2 in diameter. We have cut roots before in excess of 4 in.
I will conceed in sandier soils, small trees and shrubs the hammer driven style will probably work. If there is any clay in the soil at all getting the spade to turn loose of the ball. Then this is a new problem. For if the spade doesn't turn loose it will wreck the ball, Then livibility of the young tree will come into play. Hope this helps answer your question.

This summer I saw a small tree spade on a medium size John Deere garden tractor.
I had to stop and quiz the owner.
The spades had to be driven with a sledge hammer.
He said it worked well. It sure looked handy.
Wish I new where to get one.
At least you know they make one.

Here is the url of what I would think is the tree spade that you saw. They have them that are hand pulled, up through ones for small tractors.

Evergreen, "Caretree" makes a treespade that will fit on a skidsteer loader. Also look on E-BAY in the Ag section I have seen other kinds there also, most can be adapted to fit skidsteer or tractor or dozer.
