This question from a "newbie" so go easy on me fellows. My question is how do I find out how much disk my tractor will pull. I have a IH 656 hydrostatic gas with a 291 engine. I don't want to buy a disk and then find out it's too big for the tractor. So how do I find out? I'm wondering if it will/should pull a 14 foot disk?

I appreciate the input from everyone. I have a ten foot IH that needs some blades replaced. I think I'll do that and use it. Thanks again.

Don't know where you live, or what soil conditions you have, but here in S.W. Iowa the 656 would be a perfect match to a 14ft. tandem disk.

Also depends on the weight of the disk and the size of the blades (the bigger the blade the deeper you go). I have a 10' Taylor-Way tandem disk that your 656 would not be able to budge in plowed ground if you let it down all the way. I also have a 10' JD KBA that your 656 wouldn't even know was behind it. The Taylor-Way has 24" blades and is an immense bulk of steel, while the JD has 20" blades and is fairly light in construction.

Are you figuring the 'typical' tandem wheel disk, for secondary tillage purposes? So often I give an answer, & find out the guy wanted to pull an offset disk for digging up sod in one pass! Oops! :)

In softer spring condions, a 14' will give it a good pull. In firm fall conditions that are dry, like disking cornstalks, you could use about any gear you want.... In my type of ground for what I do, a 12-14' tandom wheel disk would seem about right.
