I know that this is way off topic for this board, but I need help from people with life experience. If booklearning was my need, I'd be asking the fellow who isn't partial to my punctuation.
I have a skunk that has taken up residence in the area of my barn / machine shed for a few weeks now & I am concerned that he is thinking that it might be a good place to take up permanent residence. The final straw was when I almost stepped on him while doing chores (in the dark this morning). I am grateful that he seems to be fairly calm and did not spray me...this time!! I don't want to press my luck!
What do you people recommend for getting rid of it----either convincing it that FAR away would be a better place to live OR disposing of him without a huge amount of nasal distress!

Something that has worked well in the past here. Use an old milk can (10 gal)laying on it's side. When I see him walking around the house looking for a place to hide, put the can right around a corner. He will go for the dark hole, with the can "baited" he will give you time to follow up with the cover. Completely sealed even if he sprays, the area isn't affected. Can take him where ever at that point. Lay the can on its side and pop the cover. Let him run or drop him, your choice. In the dark can alone, he doesn't feel threatened and won't spray.

My dad said he used to get a quarter an ear in the old days. Got many of em with just a plain ole cresent wrench. He said as long as you stay in front of him, he won't spray, one quick blow and it's all done with no smell. I know I'm not going to give it a shot....LOL. Maybe if I was 16 again I might just to see if I could....LOL.

I'd recommend killing him. Skunks will use the same den year after year and have litters of 7-10.

I usually catch a lot of skunks trapping coon and fox here in southwestern Pa. They love chicken. I use chicken livers that fishermen use for catching catfish.

Box traps will work fine as will shooting them from a distance but what I usually do is build a "cubby" set using a 5 gallon bucket and a #2 coilspring or a #220 conibear. Just lay the bucket on its side and brace it with a couple bales of hay, throw some chicken to the back, and set the trap right outside the bucket with a little chaff to cover it up. The #220 conibear would work best as it is a body grip trap and would break the skunks back the second it trips the trigger.

Lee,

There is an easy way to get rid of a skunk with no mess at all. Skunks have very sensitive hearing and don't like loud noises. Set up a radio at full bast on a hard rock station for about 24 hours. The skunk will move on to a quieter location.

Polecats are plentiful in my area. Several took up under my neighbors house and he has been live trapping them using catfood for bait, puts a tarp over the trap, carries to a pond and submerges the trap for a while to drown the pest. I would recommend elimination because they can multiply fast. Of course shooting is always good but is sometimes smelly.

I like a side shot with a .270. Makes a heck of a mess but very little spray leaks out. Usually keep a plastic bag (actually several) and bag them as soon as I shoot. I like a bag on each arm and dump the whole mess. Can almost hold your breath the whole time if you get set up ahead of time.

I have removed a lot of skunks from my Aunt's property. I usually shoot them! If you wait till you can see them at a distance, about 30 to 50 yards, and then hit them in the backside (aiming at the "bunghole") the .22 bullet will paralyze the animals spinal column as it kills it... thus no spray. However, if you only wound the animal you should be far enough away not to get hit with the spray. (out of 20+ skunk shoots... I have only wounded one... and he didn't get much spray emitted before he died).

Just depends on how good of a shot you are!

(and... us a .22 hollowpoint from a highly accurate rifle!)

I have had very good success(no smell) using golden marlin, apache, or a similar fly bait mixed with milk and set out in 4 oz. used yogurt containers that are half buried to avoid tipping over. Mix two rounded tablespoons into a pint of milk and fill the containers about half full. Remember to lock up your cats and dog for a few days until the skunk has eaten the bait. Usually
the bait is located and eaten the first night it is set out.

Lee: Two items that will work reasonably well moth balls, throw a few of them around area. The other item is make your own urine in the areas you don't want him. Wild animals large and small don't like human urine very much.

We have disposed of a lot of skunks that have made a home under my brother-in-laws stone foundation. If they have been there awhile and are settled in most deterents don't seem to affect them any more. So I would go the elimination route. Get a live trap (have-a-heart) or similar, and bait it with raw chicken (don't ask me why, it just works). Once you have him you have two choices. Take your chance with relocation, I have a guy here who does this all the time and hasn't been sprayed...Yet!. Or you can drop the cage into a bucket of water, lake, etc.

I have used a graham cracker with peanut butter to trap skunk and coon in a have a heart trap. The amazing thing is that skunks don't scent once the trap is covered, I used some old jackets and a tarp, but it really doesn't matter what it is just as long as the top, ends, and sides are covered, the bottom doesn't matter, then I was able to pick the whole thing up and carry it to my pickup and take it away.
As far as shooting, if your house is anywhere near where the skunk is, don't shoot it!!!!, full grown skunks can give a horibble scent.

Moth balls skunks hate them or if you want it dead do the trap it, cover it with a tarp and dump it in the lake.
