I haven't been on the computer in the last couple of days but thought I would add a comment. I have a NH 648 and have baled over 2000 rolls this year. I have had no problems with it and it has baled over 4000 bales total. Just the regular things of greasing and replacing a broke pickup tooth is about all I have done. I pull it with a M6030 Kubota which is rated at 56 PTO hp. I usually bale grass hay and have had no problems pulling it but would like to have about 10 or 15 more horsepower on steep ground with heavy hay. But with no more steep places than I bale I can shift down a gear or two. Don't have any experience with Vermeer but know some folks with a Vermeer that have had good results with them. I think ultimately it will be the one that best suits your operation. I would also consider dealer support. I have a NH dealer less than 10 minutes away but no Vermeer dealer close by. Good luck with which ever baler you choose.

Talked to a vermeer dealer today.Looks like I can get a Rebel 5400 with accue-tie,bale ramp, hay saver wheels, for about the same money as the NH.He was telling me about the operation of the rebel,I am not sure about the 4 ft. pickup(5 ft. with hay saver wheels,NH has 72 in. pickup),and shutting off the pto to eject a bale.Is this common with most RD balers? I don't think you have to on the NH.The dealer told me to come and look at one(rebel) when he gets it in,He's about forty miles away,NH about twenty miles away.I'll more than likely go look at it.Thanks for all the info

The NH648 model is no longer in production. It is now a BR740 with a new look. The NH648 recommends 60 HP min. The Vermeer Rebel 5400 only needs 40 HP. You can pull the Vermeer with a smaller tractor and it will take hay at least 2 gears faster. The NH is a good machine because it uses the old expired Vermeer patents, but why pay more for older technology & a discontinued model when you can have a New Vermeer Rebel 5400. The Vermeer 5400 Rebel is the #1 selling round baler in the USA.

What is your dealer support? For me I would let price and support be my guide. Havent heard anything bad from the Rebel owners. I personally would get the NH if there was $1000 or less difference in price. Have got to (well this is a family site) to get a Vermeer dealer and he doesnt stock many parts. Got 4 NH dealers within 45 minutes and 1 stocks just about a complete baler. My dad and I each have a NH 650 (older, bigger version of the 648) really like them. Couple of neighbors just got 648 silage specials and seem to be just as good as the 650's.

I have no experience with either one, but from what I read & hear & see in the neighborhood, you are picking between 2 of the most popular, so probably won't go wrong. :)

Get the Vermeer..... I have one. I DON'T have the NH648. I can't tell you much about the New Holland. They make good stuff. I can't knock what I don't know about. The Vermeer 5400 Rebel is one of the best "machines" I've ever bought. Along with a great baler, you get a good price, and dealer support/factory support, worthy of such a fine piece of equipment. I run mine behind a 60 HP JD2440. Way more than enough power. I've talked to a number of Rebel buyers. NO ONE IS DIS-SATISFIED.

During the summer months I work for my friends dad in a custom round bale service. I have no experience with NH or the Rebel, but if the Rebel is like his 605 XL except smaller and without all the gismos it will be a good baler. One thing I recommend (if you get a Rebel) is getting the extension lines to grease the pins/hinge on the tail gate. It can be a bear to try climbing on top of it to grease them when not equiped.
