Hello everyone, beautiful day here in Missouri. I have been looking for a used baler. I won't bale alot (Less than 1k a year, but could be more if I get the time and opportunity). I was at an equipment dealer last weekend and he had an old IH 46 (which is what I would like to have), an old AC,an Oliver, a Massey-Ferguson,and a Case. Does any one know if any of these are better than the others. My Dad has had a IH 46 since the mid 60's and it has been a fair old baler. It is starting to have some problems and Dad is looking at a IH 435. Wants to sell me his old baler. The plunger is hanging up an it twists the u-joints out. Says he will fix it. We'll see. He is a NH hater and has me scared of a NH but if I could find one worth the money I might try one. I will pull it with my C Farmall, ( you will be surprised). Any suggestions. Sorry for rambling.... David

Time for an opinion on older balers, I guess! There are only two brands of older square balers. Only two that are worth owning, that is. They are Hew Holland and John deere. In my opinion, a Baler from CASE, Allis Chalmers or Oliver is something to "restore" with a set of new decals and fresh paint, after which you hook it behind an appropriate tractor of the same make and age and take it to a show. IHC never successfully built an acceptable square baler. The IHC 45T has the dubious distinction of being the very worst baler ever sold. Newer balers from IHC are not much of an improvement. Balers from MF or Ford are a distant 3rd or 4th behind NH and JD. Do yourself a favor and look for either NH or JD, depending on which dealer is better in your area. Either brand will have techs who will be familiar with balers from those brans, they'll both have ample used parts availablity, and they will be able to service and adjust your baler so that is bales perfectly. Finding someone who knows how to properly adjust and service a 430 IHC baler, let alone something as old as a 46 isn't going to be easy to do at a lot of Cih dealerships!

David,
I have an IH 430 All Twine that I might consider selling. The only reason I would get rid of it is that I want one with green paint. (Guess I could paint it green) I have put all new plunger bearings in it, new bearings in the pickup, & a new tire. Got the knotters working good a couple of years ago & I'm very happy with it. Baled about 600 bales this year. Located in SW Missouri near Joplin.

For only 1000 bales or so I would suggest a older NH or JD baler.
JD 14t or 24t would be a good fit.
Nh just about any thing over a 66 would be fine.
66 is ok too if you dont mind the wad board.
Trick is finding a good one thats 40+ years old.
I gave up on that idea when I was looking. A JD or New Holland in great condition is going to run you $1500 or so if you find one.
I found that as long as the gear box is good and the bale chamber is not rusted out. You can make any NH baler make good bales for $300 in parts.
If you go all out like I did you can put $900 or so in one.
I started with 2 NH 68's for $200 and with $900 in parts made one real good baler. Better than any $1100 baler you can find any where.
You can do the same with the old JD balers just need to double the parts prices. Example new needle for a NH 68 is $58 same for a JD14t is about $113.
Moral of the story is if your going to buy a old baler. Be prepaired to tinker with it. If you have to tinker any way, why not save some money and have a good machine when your done?

I have a N.H. 65 and N.H. 273. Spent 200 dollars on the 65 and rebuilt it with another 800.00. Bought the 273 for 1200.00 two years ago. I use the 65 for a spare but havent had to yet that 273 8is one baling SOB... I talked with a repair guy once before purchasing mine..he told me this... Of the N.H. Balers 268,269,272,273 GOOD Balers
311,316,326 Great Balers
310, 315, 320 CRAP. so that was his opinion. I personally wouldn't have any other and most of my other equipment is J.D. Also you dont get much of a baler for under 1000.00. Trust me...

Good Luck and Watch those arms and hands..

Wife just called a friend and bought his NH268. We'd used it some and it had done well for us. Am looking forward to having it under our roof. We used an Oliver 60T for our bailing this summer. 1700 bales of sheer misery. Glad that one's gone. Suggest you avoid Oliver. Had an awful time getting solid bales and having the knots stay knotted!

Where are you located? I may know where there is an old 46 McCormick if you are interested. Matt

I would agree with the other post, if you can find an older NH or JD, I prefer NH, think they will give you better service and a lot of parts are still available. I don't know much about the IH 46, I wonder if it similar to the IH 56 only smaller. I ran a 56 for several years and it was very dependable, also very heavy. The problem is you want somethign dependable weather you bail 100 or 10000 bales.

There isn't one in the list I would really want; the 46 is the best bet.

NH or JD are the only way to go to get a dependable, reliable older baler where you can find parts on the shelf & experienced people to set them up. All the rest might work, might leave you sitting with a rainstorm coming.....

I agree- the list leaves much to be desired. Older IH had poor knotters. NH first, JD second, all the others a distant last place.
