I finally got to use my 271 baler that I bought for 250.00. I replaced the bill hooks, timed the baler, put nylon bearings on pto covers, cleaned the unit, greased all zerks, oiled the chains, replaced the guage for the bale tensioner hydrolics ( put in a 100 psi unit) and put in new polly twine. I have some issuses still, the first three bales that came out did not tie on the pick up side. All the bales there after have good knots but I noticed that the twine in the knoter on the pick up side is not in the grove but sits up and over to the right. How do I correct this. Also I noticed that the twine ends look as if they are cut with some thing very dull, I assume that the knives are dull or rusty as I think that this baler was not used for quit a few years by the way the bale shut is rusted. Another problem is that on the same side the bales are longer causing most of the bales to come out banana shape. I am thinking that part of the problem is that I am rebaling some hay (re baling the good hay and discarding the bad) that my son had stacked wrong (moisture problems and the bottom bales were put down on the flat. Can't blame him, he has never worked on a farm and I was away on holidays in July. I have the pressure guage showing about 115 psi if I were to extend the markings, (need to replace the guage with a 200 psi one). What psi setting should I use, I am shure it will change when the baler chamber and shut polish up. One last thing, when the plunger has a fair bit of hay in front on the compression stroke, a bit of knock can be heard, is this common. I put throug about 25 bales so far.

Not sure what "Groove" you are talking about, is that on twine discs? If so the needles may not be adjusted properly or discs may need adjusting. Knives may be dull or out of adjustment. Also may have been used with sisel twine before instead of plastic. It is hard to get very good bales when doing rebales, the hay just doesn't get feed even. To get good bales in the field on regular hay you can move feeder fork tines or change the way you are feeding the hay to the baler, ie speed and where picking up on pickup. I think some of the problems will work out when you are in the field.
