I a neighbor recently pulled an old baler out of his barn. It is a McCormick 46 and looks smaller. Are these balers any good? How much horse power is needed to run one? What is a good price? Tires hold air. Probably needs some good oiling to free everything up. Is it worth the trouble? He also has an older small New Idea ground driven manure spreader I think? It is a yellowish color. Is it worth much? How much are small gravity wagons going for? Thanks a lot.

Used one with 28 HP JD B with a bale thrower pulling loaded wagons as easy as did the 38 HP JD AR tractor, actually would do more work

Hi, just a caution with an IH 46 baler. Before using this baler be sure to check the spring on the plunger stop block. This spring is located under the bale chamber just to the rear of the axle. It's function is to activate the plunger stop block everytime the needles go into the bale chamber. This spring has a habit of breaking or falling off and since it is out of sight it is never missed until someting jams the needles in the bale chamber and the plunger crashes into the needles.
My dad had this experience twice in 20 years.

Behind any NH or JD old baler, that 46 is the most popular around 'here' of the 'other' makes. Brings a $100 to maybe $500 depending on condition & time of year.

Small manure spreader depends on the small-farmette market in your area. If none, you can't give it away. If many, $500 will be an opening bid.

'Small' gravity wagon is 200bu 'here' and go $500 - give or take for condition.

The IH 46 was good baler. Had an excellent pickup. The knotters could be a challange at times. Most important use good quality twine and keep twine knives sharp. We had one for 20 years, ran it with 40HP B414D pulling wagon behind. Neighbor had one and ran it with 8N Ford but never pulled wagon behind. These balers came on the market about 1960.

IH 46 was a vast improvement over the old 45 (what wouldn't be?). The only problem that I'm aware of is a weakness for breaking cranks on the plunger , otherwise, those 46's baled a lot of hay in this area. It also helped to have an excellent dealer in the area as well.
