I was wondering if anybody knew of a manufacturer that made a large (5-6ft) dethatching rake similar to the little ones you see at Home Depot, Fleet Farm, etc. that are made by Brinly or Agri-Fab. I need to dethatch about 5-6 acres of lawn and want to pull a larger tool behind my 8n or jubilee and don't want to waste time pulling one of the $39.99 versions! I have a 6ft Land Pride landscape rake but that would not only dethatch but "delawn" as well. Would a drag harrow like the ones that Northern Tool sells work?

Opico, which I believe is an American company, market a rake for grass harrowing and weeding cereals here in UK, although it does not appear in the US website!

I know this will sound crazy but a 4 wheel hay rake does a great job of dethatching. The rake works by dragging it on the ground and it works great. I use it alot in the spring to dethatch and scratch the ground so I can add a bit of seed to thicken a lawn. Just a thought and you might be able to pick one up cheap at the end of the hay season. They sell new for less than $500 so keep that in mind as you find other implements. Might be able to find a friend that does hay that will let you borrow one to try or go to a dealer and see if they have one that they would rent or loan for the day.
