I have used several IH sickle mowers, but I just bought a JD #37 with a 9' bar from a neighbor for $500. Do you think that was a fair price and was the 37 a good mower? I don't have much experience with John Deere stuff, because my dad was an IH guy.

All it needs is a new sickle and it should be ready to head out to the field and start mowing.

I'd say that is about the right price to pay for a machine that is in good shape. I had one I used for a few years behind a WD allis, and it worked well. I just sold it this fall, after not using it for two years when I bought a haybine. I sold mine with the cylinder, and three sickles for the same price you stated.
