I have used the YT Forums (and others) for years and there is no better group of people or bank of knowledge out there, but something just grates on me that I just need to spew out. I don't expect anyone to be perfect (especially not me) but it seems some people intentionally post with no punctation, no capitalization (OR ALL CAPS), and little regard for grammar. It makes some posts dang near impossible to read, especially if the whole paragraph is one long sentence with no punctuation. I am sure that I am not the only one who finds this hard to read, but if I am so be it, at least I vented for the day!

Have a good one, and keep up the great transfer of knowledge that happens everyday on these boards.

Now that was neat....but imagine if you left out the punctuation :-)

I will have to send that one around, I could read the entire thing no problem. Amazing what researchers pick up on to study.

We are a bunch of French students interested in agricultural engineering and we do not agree with you about those spelling mistakes. On the contrary, we encourage you to misspell words as often as it is possible whenever you write because your mistakes are dang useful to us and nobody is perfect, you should see our French! Believe it or not, your mistakes allow us to improve our spelling in English as our lecturer makes us correct them in order to guess what you possibly mean so that when we read your discusssion forum, the benefit we gain is twofold : First we learn much about agricultural engineeering when we read your questions and replies and secondly we also have the opportunity to improve our written expression.
As a conclusion, the more mistakes you make, the better! Isn't that just dang great!!!

Yep, I agree, we all learn from our (and other people's) mistakes. Again, I never complained about honest mistakes, only people who appear to INTENTIONALLY post in an inappropriate way. Sorry again.

To be honest and in spite of the content of our previous message which was just humour, we do believe that you are quite right to defend your spelling and proper grammar and you have no reason to apologize. Best wishes and take care!

Whoa Everybody!!!!! !!!!

The message in my original post was about #1) How great everyone on this board is and how much information is passed around! #2) It DID NOT put down anyone who does not type well, cannot spell through no fault of their own, or has to hunt and peck to type.

It was aimed at those who think it is "cool" or funny to post one long sentence, type in all caps (unless they need to do so to see the screen well), or in some way "INTENTIONALLY" make it harder for those reading the post to read it or get the correct information out of it.

I am once again apologizing to those who took offense through their perception of my first post. I come from a family who has farmed since they arrived in America in the 1800's from Scandinavia with NO education, only a strong work ethic and ability to make something from nothing. I am proud to be able to associate today with others like them, which seem to be most everyone who posts to and reads from the YT boards.

Accept my apologies and lets move on to helping others as we always have. Sorry....

I see this board as a place to talk about tractors, and the lives of people that use/restore/collect them. It is NOT about being "perfect". If you can spell correctly, and punctuate perfectly, that's great. Proud of you. What I tend to "listen to", is the "substance" of a message. Just think of it this way. If so many of us didn't make mistakes, you wouldn't be so special for not making any.

I too try to proof what I write. Sometimes it may be a quick post to answer a question and I just miss it, sometimes a typo, and sometimes spell check has ruined us. I also see some people who are probably using a keyboard for the first few times and some who are writing as well as they know how. That is why I try to be understanding and tolerant. Then there are lots of other challenges that many folks face, for example, I may have a PhD in agronomy but I am also dyslexic. Every word that I see is backwards and I read right to left. I can't look at the screen and type, have to look at the keys and then, sometimes a typo gets missed.

Brent: I have been on forums now close to 4 years, really never got too upset about grammer or spelling. I know my own is not perfect. I always say," let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

One of the most painful things to watch happen on here is to see someone trying to answer a question , without enough information. This one is getting much better, than it was 4 years ago. Back then guys were apologizing for long posts, and yet had not included all pertinent information. That one is much improved over the past four years.

Most of your so called problem is guys new to typing and the computer. I used to laugh at my grand father who never learned to drive the car, truck or tractor until middle aged. He used to get in the old standard shift Chevy, hold the accelator to the floor and ride the clutch, starting away. My dad used to worry his foot would slip off clutch and he would run over something or someone. He never did the someone, some minor things yes. Heard another story about a senior in the 50s putting the old hand clutch Deere in drive shed for the night. Just before he went through the back of shed, he was heard yelling," Woa DAMN IT Woa."

KEEP ON TYPING GUYS, PRACTICE WILL MAKE PERFECT.

Didn't take typing in school proably wouldn't have helped much, I think you have to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. I do get on a roll every once in a while get up to two fingers, and two mins. per word.

I try. But on the other hand, I read the forums to gain knowledge. Some people with knowledge and wisdom to give are not good a spelling, punctuation and grammar. But as long as the meaning is clear, I really appreciate their efforts.

I contribute when I think that what I want to add might be valuable to others, or when I think that what someone has posted is wrong. But most of the time, I just read what others have written.

One thing I try to do before hitting the post message button is to proofread what I have written and correct the mistakes I recognize. It only takes a minute and makes me more certain that I have written what I wanted to, in the best way I could. I guess it is a kind of self-discipline. I do take some pride in writing the best that I can.....But I am certainly no English teacher!

Live and let live!

I will be the first to admit that people tend to get in a hurry when posting, myself included. We are all blessed with different qualities and with different things that bother us. Just because a person cant type or spell does not make him stupid. In fact, often it is just the opposite. Some of the best "helpful hints" and "common sense" approaches seem to come from the more poorly written and typed posts. If tractor discussion boards were separated by spelling, typing and grammar correctness, I'd go for one without the "post police" every time, knowing full well that my odds of learning more about the subject matter was greatly increased.

Thank you for your reply. Obviously the part of "INTENTIONALLY" misusing punctuation, etc.. was lost on many people. I am not perfect by any means, and usually have a typo or two in my posts as well. Thanks to those of you who got the "real" meaning of my post.

This Web Forum is not moderated in any sense other than sxually explicit language. This includes grammer, punctuation, spelling ("gps")etc.

ANYONE on the Internet can post articles or reply to previously posted articles, and they may do so anonymously. Therefore, the opinions, statements, prose and "gps" made in all articles and replies do not represent the official opinions of ANYONE but the poster. Neither YTMAG nor any others than the individual poster are responsible for the content of any articles or replies. No messages are screened for content, "gps", adequacy, accuracy etc.

Just like the local coffee shop not all people like cherry pie. Likewise not all the people speak the same and as such not all of us write the same. Think of this site as ONE LARGE international coffee shop and as I stated in a previous post - therein lies the beauty of this site.

Just sit back, enjoy the company, share your experiences, learn from others experience/wisdom and do your best to decipher those responses that are confusing to you. I recommend to all that if you find something confusing you ask for clarification rather than complain about internet forum protocol.

This site is FIRST on my list of favourites (Canadians spell a few words differently than Americans, but I am ok with that--- we can figger it out!) I hope that no-one stops posting on this forum because of one persons'(where the heck does that apostrophe go anyway??) criticism. I concur with most of the comments that have been made---and have my own reasons (read as excuses if you like!!)for pathetic form.

I choose to be very thankful for all you SMART people who take the time & effort to help us out. And don't forget the unknown benefactor who keeps this site going for us..... nor forget that there is NO (yes that is yelling) FEE!!!

Look buddy if you want proper english-hang out with the local arrogant english teacher, crooked lawyer, or liberal paper editor. The majority of people who toil in "proper english" couldn't find the spark plugs on an engine. It burns me when people who cannot do normal activities or calculate a process are busy criticizing the lack of a period in a sentence. This shows that our country is headed towards a period of incapable thought process, but thats Okay we will all be able to write down our ignorance on paper. This country was not won/transformed by scholars of the word-contrary to liberal belief. It was made into the great nation that it is by people who WORK and have basic skills. If you want to be around good people with an abundance of knowledge and common sense stay here. Otherwise find you a liberal forum where the discussion will operate around how much it cost to change the oil in my BMW. A former Teacher

Well JOEL,
a classic liberal name. Your attitude towards education is garnered in your approach to an answer to a much larger question. i am sure you are the type of parent who loves all A's on the report card even though the educational value behind those grades are nonexistent. Think outside the box for the benefit of your kids, a healthy approach to the american education process is the cultivation of independent thinkers, highlighting critical thinking, the ability to comprehend, analyze, equate, disect, etc. Not the current trends in education where style is valued over substance-yes I am a former teacher by choice-the hoops one has to jump through to educate americas youth is frightening. Much money is currently wasted on non educational items and salaries. Until america wakes up and realizes that sports and the equal oppurunity laws that exist in this arena-education is down the toilet. lets focus on academic achievemnt and individual student performance, lets not dumb it down to a level playing field where all students are the same. You will not find this in society-we are a competitive capitalistic society. Hope your daughter does well and becomes a better thinker than you
good day. my friend

It took me so long that my computer kicked me of line for non use so you'll just have to take it as it comes. I'm not a real bad speller but I' sure not a good one. Got to get dne and post before I get kicked off again. Surely you guy's can show a little mercy and read in spite of our errors. I just love these questions of thought. I have noticed a growing trend of grammar errors that seems to be connected to the internet. Most of our bad typing habits are honed in the chat rooms and those instant message windows. People type fast just to keep up with conversations with other people. In order to type fast, the use of the "shift" key is often left out of the typing process, as well as the punctuation keys. Most of the people here tend to type slow out of habit. We grew up in an era where we had to slide the carrige back to the left in order to type on the next line, and we would have to be carefull with our typing because "white out" was unknown to us.

I do not look for spelling words wrong or if the period is at the right place.I am also one of those 2 finger typers.Been 55 years since I gradutated from high school and 1 year of typing, and than milked cows. They never asked me to spell right.I have seen some of the worest spelling in the real world and it did come from teachers. wonder which half of the class they gradutated in, must have been the bottom half, or maybe last. There is nobody perfect on this earth anymore.

No better than i read that grammar, punctuation, and spelling just get in the way. Spell words as they sound don,t know where to use punctuation, don,t type any better either. When i went to school aunt Helen said i,d have use for all that stuff someday. But i was to busy watching the girls and the clock so i would know if it were time to go home. Well anyway have a good evening hope this brings a chuckle after a long week.

Alright....I better clarify what I meant before I start getting hate mail :-) . I meant that the posts that peeve me are the ones that look like they INTENTIONALLY left out the punctuation and spelling, not the typos and errors that everyone make. I am by no means a writing expert, and less of a tractor expert. That is my problem, I read ALL the posts even if they peeve me because there is so much information to be learned from EVERYONE here. This is THE BEST PLACE on the web. I hope everyone has a good weekend. Brent...

I agree with most of the guys here. I come here a LOT, and most of the time the problem appears to be inability to spell or type or lack of proof reading. It does not appear to me that so many people are doing it because they are lazy. Don't forget where a lot of these people come from. Spelling and computer skills have not been a priority throughout many of their lives. If people are new to the net, they will not know that capital letters means they are yelling.
I also see numerous posts from over seas. You have to give these guys a break for not using English as well as you would like. I stuck one finger in my skill saw last week. I have been hunt'n and peck'n for over a week. You should try it and see how many more errors you make and how much more often you lose your train of thought. If someone did not take typing class in school, they are not likely to ever get much better than hunt and peck. You've probably been typing for years: try using two fingers for a change and you will see what I mean.(proof reading is a must)

Plus a guy working on farm equipment most of their lives most likely has big fingers.
Try huntin and peckin with base ball bats.

I agree with Brent. I have seen a lot of wisdom from this and other boards. However, if a poster offers a post that is difficult to read, or understand, it certainly detracts from the post. It may well cause me to skip on to the next poster. I know that grammar and spelling do not come easily to all of us. Just asking everyone to do their best! I want your wisdom!!!

I don't post much, but I can't even begin to tell y'all how much I've learned from this site and all the posters. I don't care about punctuation and spelling, just keep sharing your knowledge. Thanks to all of you.

The one that gets me is the guy that posts all in caps. I start to yell at him, then I think that just maybe, he has trouble seeing and I just indure (sp?). I can live with it.

Ditto jocco x 1000. If you are blessed with intellect, why do you need to ask questions from the guys here anyway? You should know it all.

Actually, if you read the original post, I think the people are GREAT, which is probably better than fine. It is Friday afternoon and I thought I could just do a little venting of pet peeves at the end of a long week. I never liked English classes, but I do like being able to read something easily as opposed to fighting through it. Didn't mean to offend anyone.....so if I did I am apologizing now. (By the way if it matters I am an Agronomy teacher not English...).

Ask Greg in Az about this subject. He posted basically the same thing you did over a year ago. I am willing to bet you he gained much knowledge on the subject to ruminate over. Why would you try to insult the very people that take time to try to help you? If they can help you with a tractor or farming problem, do you really care if they mispell a word or leave out a comma? I bet the line for future advice forms to the left if anyone remembers your gratitude.

My pet peeve (and I am the world's WORST speller....) is a simple 5 letter word:

BALER.

Can't believe how often that one is misspelled here, and it's so simple.

Doesn't affect me any at all, no big deal, but just one of those things. :)

My 2 cents, when I grew up on a farm more than 50 years ago, there were my farmers that did not have the opportunity to attend school beyond public school. They had to quit school and help out on the family farm. But many of these farmers were very talented mechanically. Some could repair a machine better than the dealers mechanic or use an arc welder better than someone that spent a year on training. These farmers had to learn from the school of had knocks. Fortunately for me my mother had been a schoolteacher with a university education and she insisted that education come first and farming second. We all have our own special skills but English grammar and spelling may not be two of them. Would be nice if these message boxes had a spell/grammar check option. The only option is to compose in something like MS Word, perform spell/grammar check then cut/paste into these message boxes. I don't care if someone can spell or write a proper sentence as long as he/she can convey their knowledge/experience to rest of us. My 2 cents worth.
