I have a flat bed 4 wheel 7000 lb. trailer.
On two of the wheels I have had repeated rim leaks. Can tubes be used to solve problem?

Mark , I work in an auto repair shop and we do everything so tires are part of the day. We encounter the same problem you have with auto rims especially older aluminum rims. We use an air tool grinder to go around the area where the tire beads and thats not the side of the lip but rather the flat of the rim. We give it a good cleaning till the metal is shiney and then apply a coating of bead sealer with a brush, pop the tire on and inflate it. At the same time we remove the valve, clean the hole with a file and apply bead sealer to the new valve stem....the don't come back again, I have never had one come back to the shop after it is done. Some have recommended paint which acts as a bead sealer, definitely clean the rim. Bead sealer is available at any auto supply shop and it will solve 90%of the bead leak problems.....Mike in Exeter Ontario

had the same problem. last time I had it in the tire shop(1 1/2yr ago) mechanic told me to paint the inside of the rim so that it would not rust anymore and leak again. he sprayed it with white spray paint. It did not leak for three months so had all four tires dismounted, cleaned and painted the rims and mounted four newer tires. no leaks since even over winter

Marc, While I hate tubes, they work for bead leaks but be sure to clean all of the rust from the rim or it will flake off and wear a holein the new tube and cause another flat.

Tubes might work very well, but you have to break down the tire to get them in. I had slow leak problems in 2 of the tires on my trailer. I totally fixed the problems by adding about a cup of SLIME tire repair goop to each tire.

I wouldn't use this method if balancing is a big factor, but I didn't think it mattered much on a trailer.

It is easy and cheap--my kind of repair.

what size tires and rims??if they are 14.5 rims and of the mobile home kind then you can [not] use a tube they will wear out at the rim line

Absolutely. I run tubes in most of my farm tires. Less leaks and if something goes flat you have better odds of getting it back up and home with a tube in it.
