Hi there, I have a 5 foof Bush hog type mower and was wondering how can I identify if it manufacturered or home made. I have done the quick look and have found no exterior emblems or markings. I have not examined the under side of the deck to look at the blades yet either. The color is a faded red.

Thanks Brian P

is the gearbox square,, round like a big coffee can,, or is the back half sloped at a 45 degree??
do you think it's 10 yrs old or 20?? older ones seemed to have a plate on the angle steel on top of deck ,, newer ones decals on side of deck..
IH brand has a different blade slope that howse or independent mfr. (all red paint)hope this helps

The gear box is round like a coffee can, and it possibly could be 20+ years old. I didn't see any spot where logo/decals were located or peeled off.
The thing that leads me to believe it was a fabricated mower is the look of the Weld on the brackets where the 3-pt hooks up to and where the pivot wheel is mounted to the deck. The welds don't look pretty. Nothing saying that it wasn't fixed at one time either.

Thanks Brian P

Treeboy,
The wheel is attached by the round pipe support as you mention with 4" angle iron to the deck. The angle iron is what looks fabricated.

As far as the mower quality goes, not sure. I knocked down corm to stake out our new house. It chopped up the corn stalks and made a mess out of them with out any problems. The house is still being built and I have nothing I can use the mower on at my current resident. I plan to give it a good once over, once we move. The mower was part of the package when I purchased the 2N.

your rottery cutter sounds like an international harvester to me... they have a unique blade so when you need to replace the blades besure to get the correct ones (offset) not as much dip

Woods made mowers for IH years back, they were painted the IH red and had the round style gear box. The one I am familier with had the single point hitch system for the IH fast hitch on the Farmall and IH 140 tractors. I have seen the old single point mowers converted to the 3-point hitch systems. Ours had no markings, stickers, or other identification, accept stamped part #'s. Took us quite a while to finally figure out what we had. Mey
